Oscar Live Blog underway!

My Oscar Live Blog / Live Chat — with live Oscar Pool results — is now underway.

UPDATE: The liveblog is over, but you can read the whole thing after the jump. It starts with a cute baby picture!

Brendan Loy: 5:57 PM

brendanloy: 5:57 PM Hi, everybody! We’ve got 51 contestants in the pool. I’m feeding Loyacita right now, and as per usual with events at this hour, my liveblogging may initially be somewhat sporadic until the girls are in bed. But I’ll do my best, particularly in terms of updating the standings at right. In the mean time, chat away!

brendanloy: 5:59 PM Just got a late pool entry (#52) from Marty West. Will try to integrate it into my results spreadsheet. By the way, if you’re in the pool, mouse over your own name and double check that your picks look correct, no technical problems etc.

Lauren: 6:00 PM Good stuff Brendan! Like the technology, as always, thanks for taking the time to put it together (in the middle of feeding cute little girls 🙂 )!

Mark VL: 6:01 PM Did you get mine too Brendan? Hope I’m not too late. 🙂

Brendan: 6:02 PM Yup, just got it. Technically yours and Marty’s are both too late, but I’ll accept them. 🙂

Brendan: 6:02 PM …assuming I can get them into the spreadsheet before the awards start!

Brendan: 6:03 PM In service of which endeavour, you should probably be asking Loyacita to eat a little faster, hehe 🙂

Tim Stevens: 6:07 PM Everything looks right on mine. Unless I don’t win. In which case, they were horribly, horribly wrong.

brendanloy: 6:07 PM Loyette just informed me, apropos of nothing, that “you’re a big boy, Daddy.” (We’ve been working on the distinction of babies vs. big girls and big boys, often in the context of explaining that big girls don’t whine. 🙂 )

B. Minich: 6:08 PM So I continue my tradition unlike any other of not entering the Oscar pool

David K.: 6:08 PM I think we need to vote on which chat platform Brendan should use for his next live blog. Does this thing support polls?

Brendan: 6:09 PM B. Minich, I’ll still aceepting late entries if you can submit it in the next 5 minutes or so 🙂

B. Minich: 6:10 PM No, I’m saving up my luck/skill for the NCAA pool. Handicapping the Oscars would fail for me. I’ve never understood how it works.

Brendan: 6:10 PM David, it doesn’t directly support polls, though it does support embedding Flash objects, and posts can be made to “stay on top” (as you can see with my current notice), so if there’s a good embeddable Flash poll service I can use…

B. Minich: 6:10 PM I don’t handicap the Oscars for the same reason I don’t handicap cricket. I don’t get either.

B. Minich: 6:11 PM i at least understand basketball.

J Freeze: 6:15 PM Good Evening! I am done with the Red Carpet shows, let’s get on with the awards. At least a live blog should make it more interesting tonight. Thanks Brendan.

David K.: 6:17 PM B. Minich – I pick semi-randomly especially on the lesser known awards, mostly just to see what happens 🙂 A lot of the time i pick my favorites, regardless of their chances (I lose a lot in these pools).

David K.: 6:17 PM Brendan, i don’t know of any flash based polls. Out of curiosity why did you switch systems?

B. Minich: 6:17 PM oh, and also, this is the closest i’ll come to watching the Oscars tonight too. and i will stand on pride for this one. 😉 chatting is the closest i’ll come to expericencing Lord Oscar and his ring of DOOM

brendanloy: 6:17 PM Mark and Marty are in the pool (& should definitely double-check their picks), and we are now up to 53 entries. Polls are officially closed. 🙂

J Freeze: 6:18 PM I usually Google “expert” predictions and then go with a favorite or the “conventional wisdom”.

B. Minich: 6:18 PM heh – David, that makes sense. despite my “restraint” in picking pools i “get”, my record is pretty bad too

Brendan: 6:18 PM David, CoverItLive doesn’t allow for unmoderated live chat, and other unmoderated live chat platforms aren’t as flexible and don’t allow me to create any distinction between “live blog” and “live chat” posts

Brendan: 6:19 PM Also, the chat platform I used during the election has lost all the archives of those chats 🙁 Whereas this platform, ScribbleLive, allows me to export the entire chat to HTML and archive it on my site directly

Brendan: 6:20 PM My pool picks are based almost exclusively on the Vegas odds

B. Minich: 6:20 PM Brendan, why don’t you have a holographic chat that projects our thoughts as well as our spoken words?!?

Brendan: 6:20 PM Though I think I deviated in a couple of places, and I agonized over Best Picture

Brendan: 6:20 PM Heh

B. Minich: 6:21 PM that’s the one i could pick and actually feel like i had a good guess. so, think ye Hurt Locker or Avatar will get this nod?

brendanloy: 6:21 PM LRT Best Picture predictions: Avatar 28, Hurt Locker 22, Blind Side 1. (Which adds up to 51, not 53, so I think I need to go revisit the spreadsheet…)

Brendan: 6:22 PM I went with Hurt Locker, though my gut says Avatar, because I think the preferential (ranked) voting system hurts Avatar, which will surely have some snobby voters ranking it much lower than a bunch of movies nobody saw

B. Minich: 6:22 PM hrmmmm . . . holographic chat reminds me of Emperor Palpatine, so i take that back

Brendan: 6:22 PM or, even more horrifying, Wolf Blitzer

B. Minich: 6:23 PM had i entered, i’d go with Avatar, and the Hurt Locker director as Best Director

B. Minich: 6:23 PM Brendan: you mean “Wolf Blitzer, Wolf Blitzer”

J Freeze: 6:24 PM That may well be a really good prediction B. Minich.

brendanloy: 6:25 PM Hmm, we actually have a Best Picture vote for Precious and another for Inglorious Basterds, but for some reason, the spreadsheet is not picking up on those. Need to figure out why. Argh. 4 minutes till showtime!

B. Minich: 6:26 PM J Freeze: isn’t mine. It was the Tony Kornheiser Show’s resident movie reviewer making this prediction

B. Minich: 6:26 PM but it makes sense to me

David K.: 6:27 PM First pet peeve of the evenings, having to listen to them say “Precious: Base on the novel Push by Saphire” everytime the movie is mentioned.

David K.: 6:27 PM Its so dang awkward

Lauren: 6:29 PM Heh – I said almost the exact same thing to my husband just a bit ago too David.

J Freeze: 6:29 PM Like we don’t know what Precious is, agreed David.

brendanloy: 6:31 PM Okay, spreadsheet problems fixed, I think. … What just happened to the music at the Oscars? That was weird

brendanloy: 6:32 PM “And now, the moment you’ve all been waiting for…” A MUSICAL NUMBER!

brendanloy: 6:32 PM Only thing that would be better: a montage

Lauren: 6:32 PM With Adam Shankman producing, there’s probably going to be more of that and more dancing than usual.

J Freeze: 6:33 PM My sons refuse to accept NPH’s sexual preference. They believe he is Barney Stinson from How I met your Mother.

Mark Van Lommel: 6:35 PM Okay about 1 hour time shifted backward watching the horrid “On the Red Carpet” pre-Oscar coverage travesty (seriously can George Pinnochio ask any more vapid questions?) but I do have to say that George Clooney skipping the security line to run across the street to greet fans sign crap was pretty awesome of him.

Vicki Lopez: 6:36 PM Hey all…

brendanloy: 6:36 PM Loyette is applauding furiously at the monologue

brendanloy: 6:36 PM Apparently a big Steve Martin / Alec Baldwin fan

brendanloy: 6:37 PM Or not. She just said: “I wanna watch Pooh!”

Mark Van Lommel: 6:37 PM btw, does anybody else find it bizarre that the fans across the street are behind two layers of chain-link fence and concrete barricades similar to every police-state movie like Children of Men? Yes, in Hollywood, if you’re just a fan, you are treated like a threat to the State.

B. Minich: 6:37 PM someone is raising that girl right!

Brendan: 6:38 PM MVL: I blame Obama 🙂

David K.: 6:38 PM Sorry Loyette, no pooh, the Oscars aren’t on NBC this year.

B. Minich: 6:39 PM Ahhhhhh, NBC: The National Broadcasters of Crap

J Freeze: 6:40 PM And we know this is not on NBC because Brendan didn’t have to wait for the tape delay broadcast.

B. Minich: 6:40 PM any kick line musical numbers yet?

brendanloy: 6:41 PM Wow, that seeds-from-the-tree-of-life effect must have cost ABC at least $5

Lauren: 6:41 PM Only 1, combined with NPH’s opening song.

MRosenkrantz: 6:41 PM @bl seriously

Mark Van Lommel: 6:41 PM PR protip to actors everywhere: Do not end your answers in “so…” It’s the weakest way to end a response. /PR rant

B. Minich: 6:42 PM Tree of Life? LAME!!!! I mean, ABC/Disney owns the Circle of Life, man!!!

Brendan Loy: 6:43 PM

brendanloy: 6:43 PM Daddy’s lil’ liveblogger

Vicki Lopez: 6:43 PM oh, how cute

B. Minich: 6:43 PM you know, something seems wrong with the Oscars being one week from the start of Daylight Saving Time

B. Minich: 6:43 PM awwwwwwww!!!!

J Freeze: 6:44 PM Very cute Brendan. Start her off early.

brendanloy: 6:44 PM First award!

brendanloy: 6:44 PM Note to pool contestants: Please mouse over your name and double-check that your picks look correct. Thanks!

brendanloy: 6:44 PM Best Supporting Actor

B. Minich: 6:45 PM The envelope please

brendanloy: 6:45 PM Christoph Waltz is a prohibitive, supposedly can’t-lose favorite

J Freeze: 6:45 PM Christoph Walz come on!

Vicki Lopez: 6:45 PM bring on the points!

B. Minich: 6:45 PM Gooooo Crinstoph! Beeeeat the field!

brendanloy: 6:47 PM I’ve got Waltz pasted into the spreadsheet already, just need to click the icon that initiates the update script when he wins

Vicki Lopez: 6:48 PM god, I love Christoph Waltz. That movie was soo good

brendanloy: 6:48 PM Waltz wins!

brendanloy: 6:48 PM And I just messed up my spreadsheet in some weird way… argh

brendanloy: 6:49 PM 34-way tie for first place…

brendanloy: 6:49 PM I know you can all see that at right, but I’m posting it for posterity

Vicki Lopez: 6:50 PM My mother is glad to know she’s not the only one who missed that pick.

J Freeze: 6:53 PM iPad commercial!!!!! Cool!

Vicki Lopez: 6:53 PM that would have been cool, I got Diet Coke though

J Freeze: 6:54 PM Oddly, I am not even sure how an iPad would fit in my tech “life”.

Brendan: 6:54 PM “Do you believe in corporatism? YES!!!”

brendanloy: 6:55 PM HAHAHA JIMMY KIMMEL = F***ING BEN AFFLECK

Brendan: 6:55 PM

brendanloy: 6:56 PM And now, the night’s first unnecessary lame video skit thingy!

brendanloy: 6:57 PM But remember, it’s keeping acceptance speeches down to 40 seconds instead of 45 seconds that will keep the show from going long

brendanloy: 6:57 PM sorry, it’s too early in the show for me to be this cynical 🙂

Vicki Lopez: 6:58 PM never too early, Brendan

brendanloy: 6:58 PM Award #2: Best Animated Feature

J Freeze: 6:58 PM Squirrel!

B. Minich: 6:58 PM Up should have this

brendanloy: 6:58 PM And the winner is… Up!

Wobbly H: 6:59 PM I loved that movie!

Vicki Lopez: 6:59 PM Yeah, I cried like a baby for the first ten minutes…

brendanloy: 7:00 PM Now a 32- way tie in the Oscar Pool. I won’t post the whole list again, but it’s everyone from the prior list minus Briandot and USCROGER

J Freeze: 7:00 PM My wife hated it. She has a terrible soft spot for lonely old men.

Lauren: 7:00 PM Me too Vicki, I was watching it at my in-laws and had to leave the room I was bawling so much.

Brendan: 7:00 PM Becky watched it last night while babysitting at a friend’s house (kids were asleep), and almost cried

Vicki Lopez: 7:01 PM glad to know it wasn’t just me, Lauren

Brendan: 7:01 PM She kept it together for fear the parents would come home and find ther babysitter a blubbering mess

Vicki Lopez: 7:01 PM that would have been a funny story

Vicki Lopez: 7:02 PM am I the only one who is disappointed they aren’t performing the songs this year?

Lauren: 7:03 PM I just said the same thing to my husband.

J Freeze: 7:03 PM Wow Brendan, that is tough on your wife. I thought you got to stop babysitting when you had your own babies. Ha!

Lauren: 7:03 PM Seems like it’d be something that Shankman would have incorporated.

brendanloy: 7:03 PM Crazy Heart song wins Best Song

Wobbly H: 7:04 PM That was by far my favorite but I was afraid one of the cartoons would win. Who knew Colin Farrel could sing?

brendanloy: 7:04 PM Next commercial break, I’m going upstairs & putting Loyette to bed — do me a favor, chatters, and type in who won which awards while I’m gone, so I can quickly update the standings when I return

Mark Van Lommel: 7:05 PM opening mono(duo?)logue w/ Jeff and Steve was atrocious. “And look, there’s so-and-so!” Really? Have the writers run out of all ideas?

Mark Van Lommel: 7:06 PM (still time shifted some, sorry). But, Christoph Walt’z speech was one of the best I’ve heard.

David K.: 7:06 PM Animated feature film should be worth more than 1 point.

Vicki Lopez: 7:06 PM District 9, no shot of winning, but a great movie

brendanloy: 7:06 PM BRB

Vicki Lopez: 7:06 PM I agree David

David K.: 7:07 PM I really enjoyed District 9. It was not at all what i expected, but was really good regardless.

Becky: 7:08 PM Hi everybody.

Vicki Lopez: 7:08 PM Hey! How are you?

Becky: 7:09 PM Sleepy! But I’m kind of stoked that Up won. I just watched it last night while I was babysitting…because apparently, I’m 18 years old. 🙂

Vicki Lopez: 7:10 PM Brendan told us. You’re a better woman than I am to be able to hold back the tears

Becky: 7:11 PM Yeah, I figured they wouldn’t have me back if they found me bawling like an ass on their couch.

Vicki Lopez: 7:11 PM that’s a pretty safe bet

Becky: 7:12 PM What the hell is with his glasses?

Wobbly H: 7:13 PM Who’s the pederast with Tina Fey?

Vicki Lopez: 7:13 PM he’s too cool for school… did you notice the sneakers?

Vicki Lopez: 7:13 PM let’s go Quentin Tarantino!!!!

MRosenkrantz: 7:15 PM original screenplay: hurt locker

Vicki Lopez: 7:15 PM dammit

Wobbly H: 7:15 PM Shite. The Fake Locker won.

Vicki Lopez: 7:15 PM Inglourious Basterds got robbed

Lisa: 7:15 PM Crap

Lisa: 7:16 PM I agree Vicki

MRosenkrantz: 7:17 PM going back to the 80s

Becky: 7:17 PM Molly Ringwold still exists? I thought she was trapped in the 80’s.

Lisa: 7:17 PM Where’d they dig her up from?

Vicki Lopez: 7:17 PM she’s playing a mom on “Secret Life of the American Teenager” now… scary

Wobbly H: 7:17 PM Haha! I agree Beckles!

Becky: 7:18 PM what’s broderick up to?

David K.: 7:18 PM A win by Hurt Locker means not a win for Tarrentino, i’m ok with that 🙂

Vicki Lopez: 7:18 PM I’m not, David

Vicki Lopez: 7:18 PM 🙁

Wobbly H: 7:18 PM Not a big Tarantino fan, Davie?

David K.: 7:19 PM Can’t stand him or his movies. I haven’t seen all of them, but the ones i’ve had I have thoroughly hated.

Becky: 7:20 PM I’m reliving my childhood right here. Oh John Hughes. Is he dead or something?

MRosenkrantz: 7:20 PM waiting for the Home Alone 3 clip

Wobbly H: 7:20 PM Yes, he died. I’m kind of enjoying it myself.

David K.: 7:20 PM Yup, he’s dead, this past year.

Wobbly H: 7:21 PM Not his death, the clips 🙂

Vicki Lopez: 7:21 PM man, could Hughes movies be more classic.

Becky: 7:21 PM What’d he die of? He seems kind of young.

Becky: 7:21 PM Well, to be dead and all.

Vicki Lopez: 7:21 PM Heart attack I believe

Becky: 7:22 PM McCauley Caulkin is such a douche.

brendanloy: 7:23 PM They only gave ONE award while I was gone? LOL

David K.: 7:23 PM Yeah, it was a heart attack.

Mark Van Lommel: 7:23 PM McCauley is especially a douche because he’s dating Mila Kunis, and I’m not.

Becky: 7:23 PM I wish I could talk like Samuel L Jackson. I would never shut up. I’d read the ingredients on my cereal just to hear myself.

Vicki Lopez: 7:24 PM Why is Sam Jackson presenting Up?

Vicki Lopez: 7:24 PM Seems like Inglourious Basterds would be a better fit

brendanloy: 7:25 PM “Which movie will win the award for Best Visual Effects? Will it be ‘Avatar’?” Gee, ya THINK?

MRosenkrantz: 7:25 PM better movie: Up, or Beauty and the Beast?

Vicki Lopez: 7:25 PM Up

Lauren: 7:25 PM Up>Beauty and the Beast

brendanloy: 7:25 PM Surprising win by “Hurt Locker” over favored “Basterds” for original screenplay shakes up the standings: 1. Jeff Freeze 13
1. Jessica Cowans 13
1. Mark Van Lommel 13
1. Tom Chiavetta 13
5. Adra Graves 11
5. MT 11
7. USCROGER 10

Becky: 7:27 PM When did Steve Martin get old?

Vicki Lopez: 7:27 PM Saldana’s dress is horrendous

Lauren: 7:27 PM Was about to say the same thing Vicki.

David K.: 7:28 PM I personally don’t think one is better than the other, i think they are different. Kinda like delcious baby back ribs and a savory t-bone steak.

Becky: 7:28 PM hate the purple dress

Vicki Lopez: 7:28 PM we’re in sync tonight, Lauren

Lauren: 7:29 PM The top of the dress is okay, but the asymmetry on the bottom and all the ruffles and the ombre-like effect…far too much going on there.

Wobbly H: 7:29 PM Very few awards for an awards show.

Vicki Lopez: 7:29 PM yeah, she lthis is a waste of time

Brendan: 7:30 PM Indeed, Wobbly. But by 11:00 Eastern Time, they’ll be rushing like crazy

Mark Van Lommel: 7:30 PM I love how the end of the tribute to John Hughes featured a cutaway to Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner – two actors born before any of John’s movies came out.

Becky: 7:30 PM Saldana…I think she was in Britney Spears’ Crossroads.

brendanloy: 7:30 PM Someone asked earlier, vis a vis the monologue, whether the writers have completely run out of material. No: their best stuff was just censored. www.nypost.com

Wobbly H: 7:30 PM I feel like they always spend so much time trying to educate us common folk on how special their work is.

Vicki Lopez: 7:31 PM she was… she was also in Center Stage

MRosenkrantz: 7:31 PM the feature thingy shouldn’t be longer than the actual movies

Lauren: 7:31 PM And in the timeless classic, Drumline

Vicki Lopez: 7:32 PM how could I forget Drumline?

brendanloy: 7:32 PM Logorama wins Best Animated Short

Vicki Lopez: 7:32 PM this is not going well so far

brendanloy: 7:32 PM Top of pool leaderboard unchanged

Mark Van Lommel: 7:33 PM and why don’t make me choose between Up and Beauty and the Beast – both will be timeless classics.

Vicki Lopez: 7:33 PM Mark, it

Vicki Lopez: 7:33 PM is a real Sophie’s Choice

brendanloy: 7:33 PM Music by Prudence wins Best Documentary Short

Becky: 7:34 PM There is no way this man is straight.

Becky: 7:34 PM Who is the broad?

brendanloy: 7:34 PM Was that the first “in a world in which…” of the night?

Lisa: 7:34 PM Agreed Becky 🙂

brendanloy: 7:34 PM Again, first and second place in pool unchanged.

brendanloy: 7:34 PM 1. Jeff Freeze 13
1. Jessica Cowans 13
1. Mark Van Lommel 13
1. Tom Chiavetta 13
5. Adra Graves 11
5. MT 11
7. Chris Aemisegger 10
7. Lauren Taylor 10
7. Lisa Velte 10
7. Patrick Roach 10
7. USCROGER 10
7. Vicki Lopez 10

Lisa: 7:34 PM I think she’s the other producer

brendanloy: 7:35 PM First band + microphone cutoff of the night!

David K.: 7:35 PM Wow, they played them off with Happy Trails!? Thats harsh.

Vicki Lopez: 7:35 PM Kavi is a USC student’s film, won the Student academy award

Vicki Lopez: 7:36 PM I heard The New Tenants wasn’t that good

Mark Van Lommel: 7:37 PM I’m fast-forwarding through these awards – did the top leaderboard folks all miss the animated/short doc categories?

brendanloy: 7:37 PM The New Tenants wins Best Live Action Short. Top of leaderboard unchanged, except Mark Jordon joins the 7th-place tie. 15-way tie for 14th place

Becky: 7:37 PM Those contacts are freaky!

brendanloy: 7:37 PM (Becky and I are included in that 14th place tie)

Becky: 7:38 PM I haven’t seen so many of these movies. 🙁

brendanloy: 7:38 PM “The show seemed a little Hitler-heavy”

MRosenkrantz: 7:38 PM Ben Stiller…when the writers know ahead of time that the joke won’t work, but include it anyway

Vicki Lopez: 7:38 PM Ben Stiller was hilarious at the Independant Spirit Awards

Vicki Lopez: 7:38 PM here, not so much

brendanloy: 7:39 PM Ben Stiller = awkward laughter

David K.: 7:39 PM I’m laughing AT him not with him.

marty west: 7:39 PM lol ben stiller

marty west: 7:39 PM he has balls though

brendanloy: 7:39 PM GO STAR TREK

Becky: 7:39 PM The make up for Il Divo looked like crap.

Vicki Lopez: 7:39 PM ditto, Brendan

David K.: 7:39 PM Also, Steve Jobs is at the Oscars apparently.

Becky: 7:41 PM BOO!!!

brendanloy: 7:41 PM WOOHOO! Star Trek wins!

brendanloy: 7:41 PM 1. Jeff Freeze 14
1. Jessica Cowans 14
1. Mark Van Lommel 14
4. Tom Chiavetta 13
5. Adra Graves 12
6. Chris Aemisegger 11
6. Lisa Velte 11
6. Mark Jordon 11
6. MT 11
6. Patrick Roach 11
6. USCROGER 11
6. Vicki Lopez 11

David K.: 7:41 PM USA USA USA! STAR TREK WINS!

gahrie: 7:41 PM still at zero! can you tell i didn’t see any of these movies?

Mark Van Lommel: 7:42 PM What’s with the Hitler jokes and Meryl Streep? Did I miss something?

brendanloy: 7:42 PM Do you believe in nerdiness? YES!!!

Brendan: 7:42 PM Haha, that’s impressive gahrie. 52. Gahrie 0
52. Tim Benson 0

Jessica Cowans: 7:43 PM I’m so impressed with myself. Gotta get that in now before I start the slow trek backward.

Vicki Lopez: 7:43 PM it’s THE DUDE!

gahrie: 7:44 PM I was not going for zero either

Vicki Lopez: 7:44 PM did you see any movies this year, gahrie?

gahrie: 7:45 PM not in a theater

Mark Van Lommel: 7:45 PM I’m glad Star Trek win, because they’re sure not gonna get best VFX over Camerontar.

gahrie: 7:45 PM not in a theater

gahrie: 7:45 PM I’m more of a reader

gahrie: 7:45 PM last movie I saw in a theater was the first Ironman movie

Vicki Lopez: 7:45 PM one of those readers, eh.

Wobbly H: 7:47 PM Don’t go on a lot of dates, eh, Gahrie?

MRosenkrantz: 7:47 PM for CT viewers, does anyone like the new Channel 8 logo better than the old one?

Vicki Lopez: 7:47 PM Just curious, but is there any reason you saw Ironman in the theater?

brendanloy: 7:47 PM Jake Gyllenhall. OMG THE TROPOSPHERE!!!

gahrie: 7:48 PM well…comic book geek and a bunch of friends went out together

Mark Van Lommel: 7:48 PM @gahrie The last movie you saw was Ironman but you’re participating in an Oscar live blog? 😮

Vicki Lopez: 7:48 PM Anyone who hasn’t seen In the Loop must see it… one of the funniest movies I’ve seen in years!

Vicki Lopez: 7:49 PM that makes sense, gahrie, are you planning to see Ironman 2

Lisa: 7:49 PM Crap again

Vicki Lopez: 7:49 PM damn damn damn

brendanloy: 7:49 PM Best Adapted Screenplay: Precious, instead of Up In The Air! Vegas & Ebert led me astray!!!

Vicki Lopez: 7:50 PM yeah, and it’s crap because Up in the Air kicks Precious’s ass

MRosenkrantz: 7:50 PM when the official title of the movie includes the phrase “based on the novel”, that was my hint for adapted screenplay

brendanloy: 7:51 PM OSCAR POOL STANDINGS

David K.: 7:52 PM one = won

Brendan: 7:53 PM Again, I blame Obama

Brendan: 7:53 PM I fixed the typo 🙂

gahrie: 7:53 PM damn..perfect record ruined

Becky: 7:53 PM It seems like cheap bling on dresses is in this year. Hurray for rhinestones!

brendanloy: 7:54 PM Note that Vlada Shelkova is the defending champ! Doesn’t look like she’ll be repeating, heh

Vicki Lopez: 7:54 PM bedazzler sales are through the roof… there is a recession after all

brendanloy: 7:54 PM “…just one of many balls being held all over Hollywood tonight”

Vicki Lopez: 7:55 PM now I’m hoping Mo’Nique loses just to stick it to Precious… I doubt I need the points anymore anyway

brendanloy: 7:58 PM Can I just say, I was not at all impressed with Anna Kendrick’s acting in that clip

brendanloy: 7:58 PM Mo’Nique wins Best Supporting Actress, in the most shocking result since Christoph Waltz won Best Supporting Actor, which was itself the most shocking result since the UConn women beat Syracuse earlier today for their 70th straight win

Vicki Lopez: 7:58 PM she wasn’t my favorite part of Up in the Air

David K.: 7:58 PM Compared to her acting in those Twilight movies i bet its leaps and bounds improved though.

Becky: 7:59 PM Well shit. I picked Maggie G.

Lisa: 7:59 PM I actually liked her. But I think that was more because I saw some of myself in her character.

Becky: 7:59 PM I haven’t seen the second Twilight movie but I heard it’s much better than the first.

Becky: 7:59 PM I would like to thank my neighbor for this house plant on my head.

brendanloy: 8:00 PM FWIW, I think I have seen a grand total of two movies nominated in any category… “Avatar” and “Star Trek”

Vicki Lopez: 8:00 PM almost any movie is better than the first Twilight film

J Freeze: 8:00 PM Well, I am almost ashamed to be leading this pool. I am shocked I tell you, shocked. I have not even seen most of these flicks. No way it holds.

Becky: 8:00 PM Populah. Let’s do what’s populah.

Brendan: 8:00 PM Vicki, clearly you did not see the Eragon movie 🙂

Vicki Lopez: 8:00 PM FWIW I’ve seen 8 of 10 Best Picture nominees… how’s that workin for me

brendanloy: 8:00 PM OSCAR POOL STANDINGS

Vicki Lopez: 8:00 PM I did see Eragon

J Freeze: 8:01 PM I have only seen Avatar, Star Trek, UP!, and The Hurt Locker.

Vicki Lopez: 8:01 PM it was WAY better than Twilight

Brendan: 8:01 PM lol ok

Brendan: 8:01 PM it was pretty awful, though

Vicki Lopez: 8:02 PM it was very awful

Brendan: 8:02 PM heh

Vicki Lopez: 8:02 PM almost as awful as my picks 🙂

J Freeze: 8:03 PM One of my friends tweeted, wanting to know who the trannie dressed like Molly Ringwald was! HA! LOL!

brendanloy: 8:03 PM In case anyone is wondering, we presently have 30 “watchers” at the moment, i.e., people viewing the liveblog. It’s been fluctuating between 28-32 or so

Seth: 8:04 PM I just jumped on to see how my picks were going

Seth: 8:04 PM I just put what Slate’s predictions were, and then guessed for the categories they didn’t have

Becky: 8:04 PM Sigourney Weaver in a dress reminds me of a cat in a bath.

Seth: 8:05 PM I have been using my procrastination time for the last 2 weeks catching up on most of the meaningful nominees. Just have Inglorius Basterds left to go

brendanloy: 8:05 PM I thought Sigourney Weaver said she was awed by the “beauty of the sex.” It wasn’t until she repeated the word later that I realized she had said “sets.”

Brendan: 8:05 PM Seth, I went off the Vegas odds and Ebert’s predictions. Not working out too well. Stupid screenplay upsets

brendanloy: 8:06 PM Avatar

Lisa: 8:06 PM I know what you mean Brendan.

Seth: 8:07 PM Which person are you on the list, Brendan?

brendanloy: 8:07 PM Weirdest two-part acceptance speech ever? First guy is like “JAMES CAMERON, I LOVE YOU, PLEASE LET ME WORK WITH YOU AGAIN.” Second guy, without any transition, is like, “I ALMOST DIED”

Brendan: 8:08 PM which person on which list?

Seth: 8:08 PM n/m. I found you

Brendan: 8:09 PM Mark, are you on real time now?

J Freeze: 8:09 PM SJP is too skinny. She almost looks ill.

brendanloy: 8:09 PM Costume Design: Young Victoria

brendanloy: 8:09 PM We’re halfway home! 12 of 24 awards

brendanloy: 8:10 PM Actually doing pretty well on show pacing, but I expect a lot of montages this hour

J Freeze: 8:10 PM I seem to be lagging on TV. You are announcing winners before I see them.

Vicki Lopez: 8:10 PM the dress is not helping, it looks like it’s choking here

Mark Van Lommel: 8:10 PM Look, it’s Poison Ivy from the Batman movie!

brendanloy: 8:10 PM “I already have two of these” BECAUSE I AM BETTER THAN ALL OF YOU

Lisa: 8:10 PM SJP’s dress also looks like she’s wearing a shower curtain. And her hair looks terrible.

Becky: 8:10 PM Her hat is falling off.

brendanloy: 8:10 PM Jeff Freeze falls out of first place

Becky: 8:11 PM SJP always reminds me of a tranny

Mark Van Lommel: 8:11 PM She’ll never work in this town a…no wait.

Becky: 8:11 PM What’s on her boobs?

J Freeze: 8:11 PM Oh the TRAGEDY! I BLAME OBAMA!

Jessica Cowans: 8:11 PM Horseface.

brendanloy: 8:11 PM Did someone say “under the sea”? Da seaweed is always greenah…

Seth: 8:12 PM How could Logorama win best animated short? That thing was painful to watch

Mark Van Lommel: 8:12 PM @brendan, yep on real time (yay commercial skipping!), and also they are doing a kickass job w/ quick transitions to make things clip along. Props to showrunners.

Brendan: 8:13 PM Let the record show that the Cowans family is kicking the Loy family’s ass… LOL

Mark Van Lommel: 8:14 PM oh look a car commercial shot at 4th and Grand downtown, shocker.

J Freeze: 8:14 PM @Brenndan HEY, you almost seemed excited that I dropped out of 1st! Oh well. I will probably bomb the LRT Men’s and Women’s pools as well.

Becky: 8:15 PM Hey now. Their kids are way older!

Jessica Cowans: 8:16 PM Our kids are running WILD right now and yours are nestled all snug in their beds. Does that help?

Mark Van Lommel: 8:17 PM so are they not showing a tribute to the Hollywood greats who died last year this year?

gahrie: 8:17 PM as long as I win the NIT I will be happy

Brendan: 8:17 PM @Jeff Haha, no, I was just excited that the top of leaderboard finally changed, it had been stuck in place for a while

Becky: 8:18 PM Who died? They look like they’re at a funeral.

brendanloy: 8:18 PM MONTAGE!!!!!

brendanloy: 8:18 PM

Vicki Lopez: 8:18 PM I CANNOT stand Kristen Stewart

Becky: 8:18 PM Is this a Jamie Lee Curits tribute?

Jessica Cowans: 8:18 PM They’re vampires, sheesh!

J Freeze: 8:18 PM Oh yeah, gahrie, I forgot all about the NIT pool. Better study up for that as well.

Vicki Lopez: 8:18 PM she’s so damn melancholy

Mark Van Lommel: 8:18 PM Kristen and Taylor look so awkward.

gahrie: 8:18 PM Jamie lee is the bomb!

Mark Van Lommel: 8:18 PM nice cough Kristen! classy

David K.: 8:18 PM I’ve seen better acting from a pickle than from Kristin Stewart.

J Freeze: 8:19 PM @Becky, they are vampires…so in a tribute to our host….PANIC!

Lisa: 8:19 PM These stupid montage tributes are so pointless. Why can’t they just ditch these and give everyone an extra 5 seconds on their acceptance speech?

Brendan: 8:19 PM It’s a HORROR MONTAGE!!!!! PANIC!!!!!!

Brendan: 8:19 PM Agreed @ Lisa

MRosenkrantz: 8:20 PM oh, so THAT’S what a horror movie is

J Freeze: 8:20 PM Ok….so Best Horror movie ever?

Becky: 8:20 PM Memo to Twilight: Brad Pitt makes a hot vampire.

gahrie: 8:20 PM Little shop of horrors

MRosenkrantz: 8:20 PM They seem to like the Shining…I’m inclined to agree

Jessica Cowans: 8:21 PM The Shining scared the bejeezus out of me.

J Freeze: 8:21 PM I vote The Shining.

brendanloy: 8:21 PM I’ve actually never watched a horror movie in my life. I get sufficiently scared by scary-ish scenes from non-horror movies, like “The Sixth Sense,” that I know I couldn’t handle them. Too many nightmares & scary mental images as I’m trying to go to sleep. Yes, I’m a wimp 🙂

Mark Van Lommel: 8:21 PM <– still hasn’t seen The Shining

J Freeze: 8:21 PM REDRUM! REDRUM!

Becky: 8:21 PM Why the hell is a twerp like Zac Effron allowed on stage? Did he act in something significant?

Vicki Lopez: 8:21 PM yes, you are

brendanloy: 8:22 PM Heck there are a couple of scary-ish Star Trek episodes that used to haunt me when I was a kid

brendanloy: 8:22 PM sounds the same

Mark Van Lommel: 8:22 PM Twilight Zone scared the #*! out of me as a kid

gahrie: 8:22 PM Rocky Horror

J Freeze: 8:22 PM I really liked Scream but don’t really consider it a Horror film. Saw freaked me out as well.

Becky: 8:23 PM I had nightmares about The Blob, which is actually kind of hilarious if you’ve ever seen it.

Seth: 8:23 PM I have been watching alot of twilight zone late. I think I have about 50 of the original 153 episodes left to go.

Vicki Lopez: 8:23 PM Have any of you seen “Audition”? that movie is scary

brendanloy: 8:23 PM From Morgan Freeman’s voice to Zac Efron’s face = most jarring transition ever?

brendanloy: 8:24 PM Sound Editing … Hurt Locker

Vicki Lopez: 8:24 PM his hair is really funky too

Becky: 8:24 PM Can I confess that I haven’t heard of The Hurt Locker before I filled out my picks this afternoon?

David K.: 8:24 PM Star Trek was robbed.

Mark Van Lommel: 8:24 PM The IMAX scenes in The Dark Knight rocked my socks.

brendanloy: 8:25 PM Jeff Freeze rejoins the co-leaders!

Mark Van Lommel: 8:25 PM dangit EW and I were wrong for Sound Editing

David K.: 8:25 PM Star Trek was robbed again.

Lisa: 8:25 PM dang it

brendanloy: 8:25 PM Hurt Locker again – sound mixing

Becky: 8:26 PM Didn’t this just happen?

Mark Van Lommel: 8:26 PM does anyone else find Kathryn Bigelow stunningly attractive? Jim Cameron looks so goofy when paired with her.

Vicki Lopez: 8:26 PM w00t, it feels like forever since I got one right

brendanloy: 8:26 PM Hurt Locker building toward a sweep?

MRosenkrantz: 8:26 PM if they can squeeze art direction and set direction into one category, surely they could combine sound mixing and sound editing

Vicki Lopez: 8:26 PM Hurt Locker deserves it… great underseen movie

brendanloy: 8:27 PM Vicki, not only did you get one right, but you’re now in the Top 10. 🙂

Mark Van Lommel: 8:27 PM Hurt Locker was the best movie of last year.

J Freeze: 8:27 PM And Kathryn Bigelow just taunted Cameron. W00T!

Becky: 8:27 PM I find gray an odd choice for a dress.

Mark Van Lommel: 8:27 PM and, the first movie to do the Iraq war properly as a movie.

Vicki Lopez: 8:27 PM I like the dress and the grey, but she needed different hair and make-up, I think

Mark Van Lommel: 8:28 PM is that Kristen Bell?

brendanloy: 8:28 PM 15-second “we congratulate all the winners” bit … worse than saying nothing?

Seth: 8:28 PM For a movie about bombs, I was disappointed with how few explosions there were

MRosenkrantz: 8:28 PM I thought Jarhead was pretty decent

Mark Van Lommel: 8:28 PM whoever she’s is she’s not funny

Vicki Lopez: 8:28 PM it was actually about bomb diffusers, so it makes sense

Mark Van Lommel: 8:30 PM “and here are the awards for the nerds”

Seth: 8:31 PM I was hoping there would be explosions all over the place, and occasionally the would find a bomb before it went off, with a giant digital timer on it, and had to figure out the right wires

brendanloy: 8:31 PM Geoffrey Canada = “This American Life” superstar!

Vicki Lopez: 8:31 PM do I cut the red wire or the blue wire? 🙂

Mark Van Lommel: 8:31 PM Hurt Locker was best movie of last year, but Inglorious Basterds was the most fun. That or Zombieland.

Seth: 8:31 PM oh, and I expect any movie set in the middle east to have a minimum of belly dancing

Brendan: 8:31 PM lol @ seth

Vicki Lopez: 8:32 PM Inglourious Basterds was my personal favorite but Hurt Locker is right up there

Vicki Lopez: 8:32 PM far above Avatar

brendanloy: 8:32 PM “Avatar” was my favorite of the 1 Best Picture nominees I saw

Becky: 8:32 PM You didn’t appreciate Avatar’s brilliant script, Vicki?

Seth: 8:33 PM Inglorius basterds is the last movie I have downloaded but haven’t seen yet. Zombieland was suggested to me today on my torrent site, so I might get that, too. I’ll watch IngBast tomorrow to decompress from my micro exam

Vicki Lopez: 8:33 PM yeah, somehow I missed the brilliance of “unobtainium”… but I’m slow

brendanloy: 8:33 PM Seriously, how did Avatar not win Best Original Screenplay? How can you compete with lines like “I knew I had to take it to a whole different level”?

Seth: 8:33 PM I like the link on George Shaw’s page where the guy put Avatar sound bites over Pocahontas footage

Mark Van Lommel: 8:33 PM why are they advertising birth controls @ me. WAY TO NOT PERSONALIZE MY ADS ABC

Seth: 8:34 PM mark, maybe they know something about you that you have yet to discover

brendanloy: 8:34 PM On another note, I would like to take this opportunity to say that Becky’s lasagna is yummy

Mark Van Lommel: 8:34 PM @Seth You shouldn’t torrent movies, it takes paychecks away from working class families. 🙁

Vicki Lopez: 8:34 PM I’m just wondering if all these awards to Hurt Locker are a compensation for giving Avatar best picture

Becky: 8:34 PM Just wait until you eat the strawberry shortcake.

Vicki Lopez: 8:35 PM yummy lasagna… how do I get some?

brendanloy: 8:35 PM Wow, Sandra Bullock’s lipstick is loud

Vicki Lopez: 8:35 PM oh, and strawberry shortcake! c’mon, you’re killing me

Mark Van Lommel: 8:35 PM wish you could share lasagna and SSC over the Internets

Seth: 8:35 PM Is that parent code for something?

brendanloy: 8:35 PM HARRY POTTER! Another nominee I’ve seen

Becky: 8:35 PM sandra bullock is starting to look creepy.

brendanloy: 8:36 PM That’s 4: Avatar, Star Trek, Harry Potter, Transformers. God, I’m a nerd

brendanloy: 8:36 PM Avatar wins Cinematography

brendanloy: 8:36 PM First award Avatar has won tonight

Mark Van Lommel: 8:36 PM how old is Sandy now? 40?

Becky: 8:36 PM Yeah, it’s our anniversary so I had to make him something yummy.

Vicki Lopez: 8:36 PM oh, well Happy Anniversary!

Mark Van Lommel: 8:36 PM happy anniversary guys!

Becky: 8:37 PM Thanks!

Brendan: 8:37 PM Becky, if any of these people go back and look at the dates of the pictures from our wedding, they’re going to be very confused 🙂

David K.: 8:37 PM What? Its not your anniversary. You were married in December!

Brendan: 8:37 PM Anyway thanks!

Wobbly H: 8:37 PM Vicki, I think different people vote on the awards, so surely not compensation (the sound people vote on the sound, etc.)

Brendan: 8:37 PM haha there we go

Jessica Cowans: 8:37 PM I thought you guys got married at the end of Dec? Wasn’t I there?

Wobbly H: 8:37 PM Oh the dead montage

Brendan: 8:38 PM I’m letting Becky explain this one

brendanloy: 8:38 PM I see dead people!

brendanloy: 8:38 PM JAMES TAYLOR

Becky: 8:38 PM Our reception was at the end of December, but we actually signed the paperwork in March. It was a ND football tickets thing.

brendanloy: 8:38 PM WOOOOO

Vicki Lopez: 8:38 PM awww, how romantic

Brendan: 8:38 PM It wasn’t just our “reception”! We had a ceremony too. But yeah we were legally married in March

Jessica Cowans: 8:38 PM I saw something about your anniversary on Facebook and I figured I better leave well enough alone. 😀

Brendan: 8:38 PM 5 years ago today

Kathryn: 8:38 PM Still love Sweet Baby James

Vicki Lopez: 8:38 PM that’s to Becky and Brendan, not the dead people montage

Mark Van Lommel: 8:39 PM wow @ Demi’s dress

David K.: 8:39 PM Dom DeLuise was so great

brendanloy: 8:40 PM Mr. Magoo died????

Jessica Cowans: 8:40 PM Yeah, that was a beautiful “reception”, guys. 🙂 Congrats on 5 years!

Seth: 8:40 PM so did my latin professor who looked like Mr. magoo. Coincidence?

Vicki Lopez: 8:41 PM oh, and Wobbly, yes the sound people vote for sound, etc. but they all vote for best picture so the theory is that they might throw Best Picture votes to Avatar and “tech” awards to Hurt Locker to compensate… just a thought

brendanloy: 8:41 PM There are four possible reactions to the dead-people montage: 1) aww, it’s sad that he/she died. 2) who’s that? 3) wait, he/she died? 4) wait, he/she was still alive?!?

brendanloy: 8:41 PM OK strawberry shortcake time

Becky: 8:41 PM What movie was Michael Jackson in?

David K.: 8:41 PM Small group this year.

Seth: 8:41 PM no room for the , “thank got they are gone?” option

Mark Van Lommel: 8:42 PM i keep expecting to see Roger Ebert in these montages

Vicki Lopez: 8:42 PM brendan, there is no need to rub it in

Seth: 8:42 PM thriller

Lauren: 8:42 PM The Wiz

Wobbly H: 8:42 PM I was going to thank God that MJ wasn’t on there, not so fast

Vicki Lopez: 8:42 PM Becky, he was in The Wiz!

Wobbly H: 8:42 PM Is that a joke, Mark?

Mark Van Lommel: 8:43 PM yes, I’m a huge Ebert fan, sorry if that came off as rude!

Becky: 8:43 PM Does that mean he should be in the dead people montage? Will Britney make it in if she dies for Crossroads? That’s weird to me.

Mark Van Lommel: 8:44 PM wtf@ Carl’s Jr commercial

Vicki Lopez: 8:44 PM Yeah, she probably would make it in… super famous people will often find their way into montages they probably don’t belong in

brendanloy: 8:44 PM OMG, you guys can’t see it but there was just a hilarious local-news ad for a segment tying into Avatar … “there’s a place in Colorado with lots of ‘souls’, just like the Tree of Souls” WTF!!! I love local news

Becky: 8:45 PM I’m intrigued by these sketchers shape ups.

brendanloy: 8:45 PM (not a direct quote but that was the jist)

Vicki Lopez: 8:45 PM oh, and don’t forget that she was also in Austin Powers

Mark Van Lommel: 8:45 PM local broadcast news needs to finish dieing it’s death

Becky: 8:45 PM hate J Lo’s dress

Vicki Lopez: 8:45 PM Becky, the Reebok easy tones seem a lot better looking

Mark Van Lommel: 8:45 PM i’m pretty sure if you’re caught wearing Skechers Shape-Ups in LA they deport you to the OC

Mark Van Lommel: 8:45 PM hate Jo Lo

Vicki Lopez: 8:46 PM my mother is Jlo

brendanloy: 8:46 PM Time for a dance number!

Becky: 8:46 PM I love Hans Zimmer.

David K.: 8:46 PM oh goody, a DANCE routine…

Mark Van Lommel: 8:46 PM haha

Wobbly H: 8:46 PM This makes me wonder why they had no performances of Best Song nominees (I swear that Indian guy who was nominated for everything sang last year)

Lisa: 8:46 PM Like this 🙂

brendanloy: 8:46 PM For the record, we were at 12 awards out of 24 just a few minutes after 8:00 mountain time … we are now at 15 and it’s 8:47

Becky: 8:47 PM Hey,the audience needs time to snort heroin.

Mark Van Lommel: 8:47 PM thank God for no Jai-HO guy this year

David K.: 8:47 PM last time i checked this wasn’t the Tonys

Mark Van Lommel: 8:47 PM this dance # isn’t doing it for me

Wobbly H: 8:48 PM Touche Davie!

Mark Van Lommel: 8:48 PM so this is the de facto best songs montage?

Vicki Lopez: 8:48 PM but the show did open with NPH, so maybe it is the Tonys

Seth: 8:48 PM you snort coke, Beckers

MRosenkrantz: 8:49 PM I think I have this visualizer on WMP

brendanloy: 8:49 PM With apologies to Vicki, I feel it is my journalistic duty to confirm that the shortcake is delicious

Mark Van Lommel: 8:49 PM this show could use a little more NPH. and, Tiger Woods jokes (curse you censors)

Kathryn: 8:49 PM and the crowd goes crazy

gahrie: 8:49 PM for the record..I am beating David K

Wobbly H: 8:49 PM He’s doing the robot!

J Freeze: 8:49 PM Ok Brendan, now your just being mean.

brendanloy: 8:49 PM Meanwhile I’m debating whether to have a second Crown & Coke. Upside: my commentary by the end of the show might be marginally more interesting. Downside: it’s a Sunday night.

David K.: 8:49 PM w

David K.: 8:49 PM t

Vicki Lopez: 8:50 PM damn you dirty apes!!! (that’s my only response, Brendan)

J Freeze: 8:50 PM It won’t be strawberry time here for 3 more months.

Mark Van Lommel: 8:50 PM Brendan, I think ill join you w/ a Jameson and Giner Ale

Wobbly H: 8:50 PM Do it, Brenners, you’re a lawyer

Seth: 8:50 PM I’m drinking wine from the bottle while chatting in here and studying for micro. Go for It! It’s your sorta anniversary!

Vicki Lopez: 8:51 PM drink, drink, drink, drink!

J Freeze: 8:51 PM Hey, is there an Oscar drinking game?

Becky: 8:51 PM It’s not really strawberry time here either, but they were on sale BOGO. 🙂

Vicki Lopez: 8:51 PM there are many

Seth: 8:51 PM Everytime someone thanks God and/or the academy you take a shot

Seth: 8:52 PM every time it pans to james cameron or kathryn bigelow you take a shot

J Freeze: 8:52 PM Nice Seth. So i wouldn’t be able to type by now, had I been playing.

brendanloy: 8:52 PM Best Original Score: Up

Becky: 8:52 PM Did JLo just pull her hair back after getting out of bed?

David K.: 8:52 PM dear Academy, i’d rather listen to some random persons acceptance speech than watch interpretive dance. Thanks.

brendanloy: 8:52 PM Jeff Freeze, Jessica Cowans tied for lead; Mark Van Lommel falls to second

Mark Van Lommel: 8:52 PM ah good for Up

Wobbly H: 8:52 PM I’d like to see your fat ass out there

Vicki Lopez: 8:52 PM I actually liked the dance

brendanloy: 8:53 PM Kids: don’t listen to your parents!

brendanloy: 8:53 PM I’m not sure I appreciate that message 🙂

MRosenkrantz: 8:55 PM I’m a big ST fan, but seriously…

brendanloy: 8:55 PM oh gee, Avatar wins, I am shocked, SHOCKED

Mark Van Lommel: 8:55 PM yeah, bad year to be an FX film w/ Avatar there

Lisa: 8:55 PM I know, such a surprise

Vicki Lopez: 8:55 PM Any other year and I think District 9 would have gotten that

Mark Van Lommel: 8:55 PM shiz there’s James Cameron shot time!

Seth: 8:55 PM D9 had lousy effects

Seth: 8:55 PM not up to Peter Jackman’s normal work

Becky: 8:56 PM I would like to thank James Cameron. Drool.

Vicki Lopez: 8:56 PM I disagree

David K.: 8:56 PM Apparently Seth didn’t see the same film that you and I did Vicki

Wobbly H: 8:56 PM I was not entertained by that movie.

brendanloy: 8:56 PM Have you noticed how much everyone on the Avatar crew sucks up to James Cameron? There seems to be a fair amount of fear in their voices, like if they don’t adequately thank him, he will CUT THEM

Vicki Lopez: 8:56 PM in fact, I disagree completely

Lisa: 8:56 PM LOL Brendan

Seth: 8:56 PM name one scene in D9 with stunning visuals

Vicki Lopez: 8:56 PM Cameron strikes me as the biggest ass EVER

brendanloy: 8:57 PM Wow, a woman has never won best director? that’s crazy

Becky: 8:58 PM Why is it that actors never seem to age? I find that disturbing.

Vicki Lopez: 8:58 PM that is crazy… this is the year (fingers crossed)

Seth: 8:58 PM I would have picked Star Trek over D9 if Avatar wasn’t a ccontender

Becky: 8:58 PM Dude, the guy who plays captain von trapp from the sound of music lives in our neighborhood. I kind of look for him when I walk around with the girls.

MRosenkrantz: 8:59 PM Sofia Coppola won an Oscar for a movie she directed. Just not the Directing Oscar

Becky: 8:59 PM Yeah! Him!

Mark Van Lommel: 8:59 PM also, I want to see Up in the Air SO BAD. Brendan, I’m told I would identify much w/ the George Clooney character

Vicki Lopez: 8:59 PM He’s nominated tonight… well he lost already

Seth: 9:00 PM sarah palin was the first female GOP VP nominee. First doesn’t always = best

Seth: 9:00 PM I really enjoyed Up in the air

Vicki Lopez: 9:03 PM The Cove is really upsetting, but so was Food, Inc.

Becky: 9:03 PM I love documentaries. Damn, I need 27 hour days.

David K.: 9:03 PM Is someone paying you to advertise Team America tonight Brendan?

Seth: 9:03 PM The only nominee I saw was Food Inc, but I didn’t think it was best doc material

brendanloy: 9:04 PM The Cove wins Best Documentary

David K.: 9:04 PM Food Inc. is the only one i’d heard of

J Freeze: 9:04 PM W00T!

Seth: 9:04 PM sadface

Vicki Lopez: 9:04 PM Seth, I’m not going to disagree but only because we just found common ground…

brendanloy: 9:04 PM JEFF FREEZE TAKES SOLE POSSESSION OF THE LEAD!

brendanloy: 9:04 PM First person to do so all night

Becky: 9:04 PM Wow, she has nice tits.

Vicki Lopez: 9:05 PM jeebus, Becky

brendanloy: 9:05 PM Wait, did I miss Film Editing?

David K.: 9:05 PM WTH, they cut them off after 2 seconds?

Lauren: 9:05 PM Shout out to Georgia in the music…woot!

Seth: 9:05 PM Jeff and Jessica have different director choices, so they couldn’t both pull it off

Becky: 9:05 PM Well, she was showing them off. And they looked real.

brendanloy: 9:05 PM aha

Vicki Lopez: 9:05 PM no, hasn’t happened yet, Brendan… unless I missed it too

Seth: 9:05 PM who does?

brendanloy: 9:06 PM HAHAHA I TOLD A LAME JOKE

Becky: 9:06 PM “A ha ha ha okay.”

Mark Van Lommel: 9:06 PM boo Dolphins win over Mexican migrants for sympathy

MRosenkrantz: 9:06 PM Except when it’s live, it’s not editing

Mark Van Lommel: 9:07 PM @Becky how can you tell if they look real or not?

Becky: 9:07 PM I wonder if Precious is at red box.

Vicki Lopez: 9:07 PM Go Hurt Locker

brendanloy: 9:07 PM Hurt Locker march toward sweep continues. Wins Film Editing

Mark Van Lommel: 9:07 PM wasn’t Tyler Perry in Star Trek?

Becky: 9:07 PM It’s about how they sit, Mark. Fake ones are way too perky and round for the age.

Vicki Lopez: 9:09 PM Jeremy Renner is sooooo frakking hot

brendanloy: 9:09 PM Foreign Language Film will be next. Freeze picked the Argentine film. Cowans the German one. Van Lommel the French one. (Rosenkrantz the Argentine one as well)

J Freeze: 9:09 PM That’s ok Becky. At risk of being banned from LRT forever, I have never seen ANY of the Lord of the Rings movies. I am so ashamed.

Mark Van Lommel: 9:09 PM snazzily dressed

Mark Van Lommel: 9:09 PM btw, does anyone know if Kathryn Bigelow is remarried?

Seth: 9:10 PM I don’t think she is

Becky: 9:10 PM JC Penney sponsoring the Oscars? Damn, we are in a recession aren’t we?

Seth: 9:10 PM a quick wikipedia would tell you

Vicki Lopez: 9:10 PM I believe she is with Mark Boal (the screenwriter) but I’m not 100%

Mark Van Lommel: 9:10 PM i wonder who that guy is next to her?

J Freeze: 9:10 PM I doubt she remarried, the alimony would be cut off. That would be a big cut I would imagine.

Mark Van Lommel: 9:10 PM i’d rather crowdsource info since im here on a liveblog than open a wikipedia page 🙂

Brendan Loy: 9:10 PM

brendanloy: 9:10 PM Meanwhile, you guys aren’t the only ones intrigued by the shortcake…

Mark Van Lommel: 9:11 PM mm shortcake. and god the Hurt Locker was so good.

Becky: 9:11 PM You always know how to catch me looking hot, Brendan. 😛

MRosenkrantz: 9:12 PM less than half the points have become available so far…hmm

Vicki Lopez: 9:12 PM Katherine Bigelowe’s marital status is not on Wikipedia and I’m sad about not having shortcake

Brendan: 9:12 PM would you like me to post the photo of you in the dress you wore to rachel’s wedding? heh

Vicki Lopez: 9:12 PM Becky, you look WAY hot

Becky: 9:13 PM Aw, thanks Vicki.

J Freeze: 9:13 PM My wife wants to know how it’s faire that a Pussy Cat Doll get’s to be on Dancing with the Stars? Doesn’t she DANCE for a living?

Seth: 9:14 PM that always happpens

Becky: 9:14 PM Damn straight, Jeff. Totally unfair.

Seth: 9:14 PM it is rare that that person get past ~2/3 of the season

Seth: 9:14 PM it’s REALLY funny when they get voted out early

Seth: 9:14 PM like Lance Bass

David K.: 9:14 PM Jeff, there is a difference between ballroom dancing and stripper dancing

Seth: 9:15 PM the line is getting thinner

J Freeze: 9:15 PM The outfits are pretty similar

Becky: 9:15 PM Yeah, I always see strippers doing waltzes and fox trots.

J Freeze: 9:15 PM or so I have been told.

Mark Van Lommel: 9:16 PM stripper dancing is hard. my coworker’s roommate teaches a poll dancing class (and sadly they don’t let guys audit)

Seth: 9:16 PM how often do you hit the strip club, Becky?

Seth: 9:16 PM do the kids go with?

Jessica Cowans: 9:16 PM *snort* @ Becky.

Mark Van Lommel: 9:16 PM and c’monnnn The Prophet!

Mark Van Lommel: 9:16 PM FRACK

Vicki Lopez: 9:16 PM boo

brendanloy: 9:16 PM Argentina film wins, Mark Sanford rejoices, Jeff Freeze increases his lead

David K.: 9:16 PM Oh, i’m not saying its EASY, just different.

Seth: 9:16 PM Burma VJ??

David K.: 9:17 PM Also, i picked the award for foreign film! I’m a genius!

J Freeze: 9:17 PM WOO HOO!

Vicki Lopez: 9:17 PM How did The White Ribbon not win? 🙁

Becky: 9:17 PM I got this one right too! Rock on!

brendanloy: 9:17 PM “I want to thank the Academy for not considering N’avi a foreign language” … pretty funny line, even though it got zero response

J Freeze: 9:17 PM I am ashamed to say, Sanford’s woman in the reason I picked that film. YES I am that shallow!

Seth: 9:18 PM La Teta Asustada was cheated

Brendan: 9:18 PM LOL @ Jeff

J Freeze: 9:18 PM I figure if women are that hot in Argentina, then I would pick that film.

Brendan: 9:18 PM If you win by 1 point that will be HILARIOUS

Becky: 9:19 PM What’s with the little lamps on stage? Am I missing some deep philosophical connection between movies and lamps?

MRosenkrantz: 9:19 PM man, the jokes in tonight’s show are awful

Seth: 9:19 PM take a shot @ bad jokes!

Vicki Lopez: 9:19 PM you’d have alcohol poisoning

Becky: 9:19 PM Shit! My computer is running out of batteries! Brendan!!! Help!

Mark Van Lommel: 9:19 PM yes they are

Brendan Loy: 9:20 PM

Seth: 9:20 PM drink soda with it and eat some carbs. then the etoh goes in slower

brendanloy: 9:20 PM For those keeping score at home, Loyacita was 4 months old when that picture was taken 🙂

Vicki Lopez: 9:20 PM Brendan, HURRY! We need more boob commentaries!

Becky: 9:20 PM You’re a shit, you know that.

Vicki Lopez: 9:20 PM hubba hubba, you look super hot

Seth: 9:21 PM All the little fish have been taken out

Seth: 9:21 PM now it’s just the big ones that are left

Seth: 9:21 PM lets drop some big points

Becky: 9:22 PM Yeah, I was doing a social experiment to see how well the partners would do trying not to look at my boobs. It was fun.

J Freeze: 9:22 PM Great looking couple.

Vicki Lopez: 9:22 PM did they even try not to look?

Doc: 9:22 PM Who’s the host this year?

Vicki Lopez: 9:22 PM seems like a futile effort

Mark Van Lommel: 9:23 PM V lady = freaky

brendanloy: 9:23 PM Freeze picks: Bridges, Bullock, Hurt Locker, Hurt Locker

brendanloy: 9:23 PM Jessica Cowans: the same, except James Cameron for director

brendanloy: 9:23 PM Oh, I almost forgot to post the standings…

brendanloy: 9:23 PM OSCAR POOL STANDINGS

MRosenkrantz: 9:23 PM she’s basically playing the same character she did in SG-1

Becky: 9:23 PM This show seems to be running on time.

Becky: 9:24 PM I’m shocked!

brendanloy: 9:24 PM Rosenkrantz: Bridges, Bullock, Hurt Locker for director, Avatar for picture

brendanloy: 9:24 PM Van Lommel: same as Rosenkrantz, so eliminated

Vicki Lopez: 9:24 PM I wish Jeremy Renner had a shot at Best Actor, he was very very good in Hurt Locker

J Freeze: 9:25 PM So it looks like it is coming down to Best Picture?

Mark Van Lommel: 9:25 PM doh 🙁

brendanloy: 9:25 PM MT: Bridges, Streep, Hurt Locker for director, Avatar for picture

Seth: 9:25 PM Guy Pearce for Supporting Actor in Hurt Locker

Becky: 9:25 PM Jeff Bridges looks like he’s going to cry.

MRosenkrantz: 9:26 PM haven’t seen Hurt Locker, but I really liked his performance in The Unusuals

brendanloy: 9:26 PM Marty West, Vicki Lopez = eliminated

Becky: 9:26 PM It looks like a fan threw up on this woman. What an awful dress!

Seth: 9:26 PM he only has like 2 minutes at the very beginning

brendanloy: 9:26 PM Lauren Taylor: Bridges, Bullock, Avatar for picture and director

MRosenkrantz: 9:26 PM that “crinkle” in his eye?

Vicki Lopez: 9:26 PM Yeah, I wish that show had lasted longer… I watched them film some of it in NYC

Vicki Lopez: 9:27 PM I’m mathematically eliminated?!? Shocking 🙂

Seth: 9:27 PM why are west and lopez eliminated but Taylor gets to keep going?

J Freeze: 9:27 PM Crinkle? WTH is a crinkle?

Lauren: 9:27 PM Because I made odd picks 🙂

Becky: 9:27 PM It’s like a potato chip.

Mark Van Lommel: 9:27 PM yeah, Vera botched her speech

Mark Van Lommel: 9:28 PM lol Becky

Alec: 9:28 PM Vicki – don’t worry, Brendan allowed late entries so this whole thing is going to court tomorrow morning.

Lauren: 9:28 PM So I’ll be eliminated anyways, it just will take a little while.

Doc: 9:28 PM What’s up next? For those of us who aren’t able to watch.

MRosenkrantz: 9:28 PM it’s a combination of a twinkle plus 20 more years

brendanloy: 9:28 PM lol Alec … I blame ACORN

Becky: 9:28 PM Best actor.

Mark Van Lommel: 9:28 PM Shawshank is an impossible movie to dislike

Alec: 9:29 PM You Lamont-loving socialist, Brendan

Becky: 9:29 PM What a great Best Actor field this year. Damn.

Alec: 9:29 PM Sorry, I meant – SOCIALIST [Nuclear mushroom cloud] PANIC!

Doc: 9:29 PM I wasn’t that impressed by Clooney.

Vicki Lopez: 9:30 PM I actually like SWAT a lot

Mark Van Lommel: 9:30 PM if I didn’t rush my nominations in about 30 seconds I should have scored better. Next year, now that I know how fun these things are. 🙂

Alec: 9:31 PM Mark – I think spending 30 seconds on this is a very healthy place to be. Good for you.

Seth: 9:31 PM I hope there are some major upsets in these categories. It won’t help me any, but it could be really fun if someone else comes up out of nowhere

brendanloy: 9:31 PM

brendanloy: 9:31 PM (that was for Alec)

Alec: 9:31 PM there you go

Vicki Lopez: 9:31 PM Seth, I couldn’t agree more… I would love to see Renner or Clooney win especially since I can’t win the pool

brendanloy: 9:32 PM Best Actor… Bridges

Becky: 9:32 PM I picked him!

Alec: 9:32 PM Thanks Brendan! (I forgot the OMG bit, which makes it sooo much better!)

Doc: 9:32 PM Let’s hear it for the Dude.

Becky: 9:32 PM I’d do him.

brendanloy: 9:32 PM hey!

Alec: 9:32 PM Me too

brendanloy: 9:32 PM 🙂

Vicki Lopez: 9:33 PM as he said at the Spirit Awards “this award will really tie the room together”

Seth: 9:33 PM let’s keep this chat PG now

Seth: 9:33 PM or at least PG-13

Becky: 9:33 PM Are strippers pg 13?

Vicki Lopez: 9:34 PM
PG-13 means we could still get one f-bomb in this chat

Alec: 9:34 PM Not if they’re doing it right

Lauren: 9:34 PM I suppose it depends on how far they strip 🙂

Doc: 9:34 PM Well, according to Be Cool, you can drop the F-bomb once for a PG-13.

J Freeze: 9:34 PM Not if I am paying them.

Seth: 9:34 PM also depends on the cinemetography

brendanloy: 9:34 PM OK, assuming Bullock wins Best Actress, I think these are the scenarios… Jeff Freeze wins if Hurt Locker sweeps director & picture; Lauren Taylor wins if Avatar sweeps director & picture; Jessica Cowans wins if Avatar wins best director but NOT best picture; Michael Rosenkrantz wins if Avatar wins best picture but NOT best director

Becky: 9:34 PM Ugh, I’m so ready for bed.

Seth: 9:34 PM “implied stripping” can definately get you downgraded from R ro PG-13

Mark Van Lommel: 9:34 PM @Doc true but only if it’s used in a non-sexual manner and it’s not directed as an insult. “WTF is going on” is alowed

Vicki Lopez: 9:34 PM this is a really long 40 sec…

Becky: 9:35 PM Did he thank maggie g?

brendanloy: 9:35 PM CNN Breaking News — Jeff Bridges has won the Oscar for best actor in ‘Crazy Heart’ at the the 82nd annual Academy Awards.

brendanloy: 9:35 PM if Streep upsets Bullock, MT wins if Hurt Locker wins director but Avatar wins picture

brendanloy: 9:35 PM really, CNN?

brendanloy: 9:35 PM (that was a twitter auto-post)

Mark Van Lommel: 9:35 PM heh

Doc: 9:35 PM Can they get it all done before I have to get back to work?

Mark Van Lommel: 9:35 PM Maggie Gyllenhall was miscast for Crazy Heart

David K.: 9:36 PM thats what you get for twittering while you type

Seth: 9:36 PM tweeting, David

Seth: 9:36 PM birds flitter and tweet. They do not twitter

Vicki Lopez: 9:36 PM Maggie G. was good, not great, but I’m a big fan of her in general

Vicki Lopez: 9:37 PM definitely like her better than Jake G.

Becky: 9:37 PM She was great on Sesame Street.

David K.: 9:37 PM twittering, tweeting, its still the mostest lamerest

Seth: 9:37 PM what? no love for donnie darko?

Vicki Lopez: 9:37 PM she was on Sesame street?

Seth: 9:37 PM agreed

Mark Van Lommel: 9:37 PM Jeff Bridges is a crazy nut

Doc: 9:38 PM Secretary.

Vicki Lopez: 9:38 PM actually, no, I’ve seen Donnie Darko a few times and it doesn’t hold up over time, in my opinion

Doc: 9:38 PM Secretary.

Vicki Lopez: 9:38 PM actually, no, I’ve seen Donnie Darko a few times and it doesn’t hold up over time, in my opinion

Vicki Lopez: 9:38 PM Secretary is tone of my favorite movies

Vicki Lopez: 9:38 PM Secretary is tone of my favorite movies

Doc: 9:38 PM Uh, I only said that once.

Vicki Lopez: 9:38 PM Secretary is tone of my favorite movies

Vicki Lopez: 9:38 PM actually, no, I’ve seen Donnie Darko a few times and it doesn’t hold up over time, in my opinion

David K.: 9:38 PM bit of an echo in here

Vicki Lopez: 9:38 PM Secretary is tone of my favorite movies

David K.: 9:38 PM bit of an echo in here

David K.: 9:38 PM bit of an echo in here

Alec: 9:39 PM Am I really drunk, or is everyone else seeing double?

Vicki Lopez: 9:39 PM this is trippy

Becky: 9:39 PM we’re all seeing double

J Freeze: 9:39 PM Secretary was….interesting.

brendanloy: 9:39 PM hmm, not sure what’s happening

Doc: 9:39 PM Are they mutually exclusive?

brendanloy: 9:39 PM i blame Obama

Alec: 9:39 PM ‘Interesting’ – yes, good choice of adjective!

Doc: 9:39 PM Yeah, but Obama blames Bush.

David K.: 9:39 PM its not Obama, its Al Gore, he broke the internet

J Freeze: 9:39 PM I blame Becky’s red dress.

Becky: 9:40 PM what’s the deal with the “let’s say something nice about the nominees” thing?

brendanloy: 9:40 PM Dammit, I’m only one point behind in my office Oscar pool ($50 pot), but my picks are the same as the leader’s. Should’ve picked either Meryl Streep or Avatar, then I’d still have a chance!

Vicki Lopez: 9:40 PM they did this last year too

Alec: 9:40 PM I don’t remember it being this bad last year.

brendanloy: 9:40 PM Let me be clear: I inherited the Internet

J Freeze: 9:40 PM Hey who invited Urkel?

Alec: 9:40 PM heheh

Vicki Lopez: 9:41 PM it seemed shorter last year

Seth: 9:41 PM Becky, you have my IMDBing Sesame Street now

Alec: 9:41 PM Oh God yes, but it always seems shorter last year. In fact, it always is shorter last year!

MRosenkrantz: 9:41 PM I actually don’t mind the little speeches. At least they’re on topic.

brendanloy: 9:41 PM before I forget…

brendanloy: 9:41 PM

brendanloy: 9:42 PM I always have to post that in every liveblog

Becky: 9:42 PM WTF Brendan.

Alec: 9:42 PM “Oh, all of them”

Vicki Lopez: 9:42 PM I’m with Becky, WTF?

brendanloy: 9:42 PM It’s a tradition, I always post that graphic during every liveblog… the topic doesn’t matter

Alec: 9:42 PM “The Bush doctrine?”

Doc: 9:42 PM Come on, Putin’s pretty scary. “World leader most likely to kill you with his bare hands” ten years running.

Becky: 9:43 PM This is a seriously awkward speech.

Seth: 9:43 PM trying to make your own meme?

Alec: 9:43 PM Ah, what great memories.

brendanloy: 9:43 PM OMG OPRAH!!!

MRosenkrantz: 9:43 PM G8 leader most likely, probably. World leader, no.

Vicki Lopez: 9:43 PM ohhh nooo the Oprah effect

Seth: 9:43 PM was she a nominee?

J Freeze: 9:43 PM Bet Putin isn’t afraid of James Cameron!

Alec: 9:43 PM OMG indeed

Alec: 9:44 PM This is a really talented category

Vicki Lopez: 9:44 PM is it wrong at all that I have completely turned the corner on Oprah, and now really really dislike here

J Freeze: 9:44 PM and OPRAH is talking about her

Mark Van Lommel: 9:44 PM omg the Precious girl is crying

Alec: 9:44 PM I should I say, talented field in this category

brendanloy: 9:44 PM

Becky: 9:45 PM Yes, vicki. It’s super wrong.

Mark Van Lommel: 9:45 PM too bad she’ll never be in another big movie

Alec: 9:45 PM Brendan – LOVE IT.

Vicki Lopez: 9:45 PM 🙁

Seth: 9:45 PM @Vicky, just sad that you couldn’t hold out until she finishes her show next year

Seth: 9:45 PM and then dislike her for starting another one

Vicki Lopez: 9:45 PM it’s been a few years

Vicki Lopez: 9:46 PM love Stanley Tucci

Becky: 9:46 PM Yup. He rocks.

Seth: 9:46 PM Mr. Tushi was super creepy in The Lovely Bones. I saw it soon after seeing Julie& Julia, and it’s hard to think it’s the same actor

Doc: 9:46 PM His Eichmann was good.

brendanloy: 9:46 PM Meryl or Sandra? Sandra or Meryl? OH THE SUSPENSE

Becky: 9:46 PM Something about Sean Penn makes me think he’s going to go batshiat crazy and kill someone.

Doc: 9:46 PM And super creepy.

Vicki Lopez: 9:47 PM don’t go to the Academy Awards if you’re going to be slovenly

Vicki Lopez: 9:47 PM FIX YOUR TIE, Sean Penn!

Lisa: 9:47 PM Shock!

Becky: 9:48 PM She’s not even smiling.

Vicki Lopez: 9:48 PM how shocking…

brendanloy: 9:48 PM Bullock wins the Razzie & the Oscar in the same year!

Doc: 9:48 PM Hurray!

brendanloy: 9:48 PM She actually showed up to accept her Razzie, you know. Pretty funny stuff

J Freeze: 9:48 PM same weekend!

Mark Van Lommel: 9:48 PM did Sandy just snub a hug from Meryl? omfg

Seth: 9:49 PM 16th place – my highest tonight. and down from 7 way ties to only 2

Lauren: 9:49 PM Soft spot in my heart for The Blind Side – it was partially filmed at the school where I play basketball.

Vicki Lopez: 9:49 PM she brought the shooting script to the Razzies and challenged the voters to give her a better line reading

brendanloy: 9:49 PM CNN Breaking News — Sandra Bullock has won the Oscar for best actress in ‘The Blind Side’ at the 82nd annual Academy Awards.

brendanloy: 9:49 PM

Mark Van Lommel: 9:49 PM RT@ EW Sam Worthington ordered a beer at the bar–then realized he didn’t have money to pay for it. Bartender gave it to him free.

Wobbly H: 9:49 PM The Blind Side looks like a great movie. I just read the Michael Lewis article about the player–pretty amazing.

Vicki Lopez: 9:51 PM Jesse James is such a cry baby

Becky: 9:51 PM I feel like I missed something.

Seth: 9:51 PM Rich dudes get all the free stuff

J Freeze: 9:51 PM This is a REALLY long 40 seconds. Come on it is Midnight on the east coast.

Seth: 9:51 PM 🙁

brendanloy: 9:51 PM OK, assuming no huge upset (i.e., a win by anyone other than Avatar or Hurt Locker in the last 2 categories), it’s down to Freeze, Cowans, Rosenkrantz & Taylor

Wobbly H: 9:52 PM I think Michael Oher (the player the movie is based on) was there.

Vicki Lopez: 9:52 PM FINALLY, let’s get this finished!

brendanloy: 9:52 PM “or it could be some white guy”

J Freeze: 9:52 PM Come on The Hurt Locker!

Jess: 9:52 PM C’mon White guy!

brendanloy: 9:52 PM Freeze, Rosenkrantz need Bigelow to win

brendanloy: 9:52 PM Cowans, Taylor need Cameron to win

Vicki Lopez: 9:53 PM BIGELOW, BIGELOW, BIGELOW!

brendanloy: 9:53 PM (that’s Lauren Taylor, not Alec)

Alec: 9:53 PM rub it in why don’t you 🙂

brendanloy: 9:54 PM Katherine Bigelow wins

Becky: 9:54 PM Boo.

Kathryn: 9:54 PM Does anyone see a resemblance between Kathryn Bigelow and Natasha Richardson? Same mouth?

Vicki Lopez: 9:54 PM woohoo!

Alec: 9:54 PM yay

Lauren: 9:54 PM Good for her.

Jess: 9:54 PM Boo, indeed.

MRosenkrantz: 9:54 PM halfway there

Becky: 9:54 PM What a hideous way to announce an award.

brendanloy: 9:54 PM “well the time has come” … way to make the very moment in which her career-crowning achievement is announced all about her gender

Doc: 9:54 PM Cool. First woman to take it.

Wobbly H: 9:54 PM I feel bad for the black guy.

Becky: 9:55 PM And now the uterus may come onstage.

Doc: 9:55 PM Though Campion should have won for the Piano.

Seth: 9:55 PM Oh, they’re gonna let down the anti-ovary shield?

Vicki Lopez: 9:55 PM you should feel extra bad, he’s black AND gay!

Jess: 9:55 PM And finally, I’d like to say… SUCK IT, Cameron!!

J Freeze: 9:55 PM Gooooo Bigelow, BEEEAAT Cameron…Suck It Cameron. (Can you tell I have been to too many ND Hoops games?)

brendanloy: 9:55 PM OSCAR POOL STANDINGS

5. Vicki Lopez 53
6. A.J. St. John 51
6. Alec Taylor 51
6. Brendan Loy 51
6. Chris Aemisegger 51
6. Lisa Velte 51

Wobbly H: 9:56 PM Ha–was referring to “The time has come” and clearly not referring to him

brendanloy: 9:57 PM If Avatar wins, Rosenkrantz wins. If Hurt Locker or any other movie wins, Freeze wins.

Kathryn: 9:57 PM She seems really shocked

MRosenkrantz: 9:57 PM and the music

brendanloy: 9:57 PM And if the Hurt Locker wins, Freeze will have an all-time record 74 out of 80 points

MRosenkrantz: 9:57 PM omg

Seth: 9:57 PM if hurt locker wins, I think I break the top 10!

brendanloy: 9:57 PM HURT LOCKER WINS

brendanloy: 9:57 PM (that was a really quick announcement)

J Freeze: 9:57 PM Wow Really? All time? Shocked I say, SHOCKED!

Vicki Lopez: 9:58 PM how frakking anti climactic

David K.: 9:58 PM Avatar was robbed.

Doc: 9:58 PM Yay!

brendanloy: 9:58 PM Jeff Freeze wins the Oscar pool with a record 74 points!!!

Kathryn: 9:58 PM Yippee. Thanks Brendan and Becky. G’night

Alec: 9:58 PM Congratulations Jeff!

Doc: 9:58 PM Avatar was crap. Beautiful crap, but crap.

Becky: 9:58 PM I predict people bitching about the voting system.

Vicki Lopez: 9:58 PM Congrats Jeff… I hate you a little

David K.: 9:58 PM Why was it crap? Because it wasn’t gritty or artsy?

J Freeze: 9:58 PM I would Like to thank…the interwebs, specifically Google for the help.

Vicki Lopez: 9:58 PM jk, seriously, congrats

Mark Van Lommel: 9:58 PM wow great speech

MRosenkrantz: 9:58 PM congrats to jf

Becky: 9:58 PM I agree Doc. I thought Avatar was beautiful, but complete shit.

David K.: 9:58 PM Why can’t the most entertaining movie be considered the best?

brendanloy: 9:58 PM And, Vicki, guess who finished second again 🙂

Seth: 9:59 PM way to grab 2nd from nowhere, vicky

Becky: 9:59 PM Congrats on second, Vicki! Huzzah!

Vicki Lopez: 9:59 PM thanks seth… Brendan, I hate this yearly punishment

David K.: 9:59 PM Also, i think there is no way Hurt Locker wins under the normal voting system.

Wobbly H: 9:59 PM Because they are overlapping but distinct criteria, Davie.

Doc: 9:59 PM Gritty is not a requirement. Good storyline is.

Vicki Lopez: 9:59 PM David, Avatar wasn’t even the most “entertaining” movie this year

Wobbly H: 10:00 PM Decent screenplay helps.

Vicki Lopez: 10:00 PM it was just the most amazing to look at

Mike: 10:00 PM I deserve credit for having my score equal to my ordinal placement.

Alec: 10:00 PM Agree Vicki

J Freeze: 10:00 PM Thanks Brendan for making this an interesting and fun night.

David K.: 10:00 PM So ripping off the story of a soldier is enough to make it the best movie?

brendanloy: 10:00 PM CNN Breaking News — Kathryn Bigelow has won the Oscar for best director of ‘The Hurt Locker’ at the 82nd annual Academy Awards.

brendanloy: 10:00 PM wow, CNN is really on top of things

Doc: 10:00 PM Yes, that’s exactly right David.

Wobbly H: 10:00 PM Why not, Hurt Locker won all the other awards (in terms of voting system).

Vicki Lopez: 10:00 PM David, you must be kidding

brendanloy: 10:01 PM also, I didn’t realize there was an award for “best director of The Hurt Locker.” did it have multiple directors?

Wobbly H: 10:01 PM Have you seen Hurt Locker, Davie?

Seth: 10:01 PM Harry Potter for 2012 Best Picture

J Freeze: 10:01 PM CNN Breaking News — Jeff Freeze sets LRT record with 74 points! WOOHOO!

Vicki Lopez: 10:01 PM Avatar isn’t exactly original

Seth: 10:01 PM Avatar = pocahontas

Vicki Lopez: 10:01 PM Best Picture is the producers awards

Wobbly H: 10:01 PM You mean Dances with Smurfs?

Mike: 10:01 PM No, no, it was Pocahontas in Space.

brendanloy: 10:01 PM show ends at 10:02:15

brendanloy: 10:01 PM with gunships

Vicki Lopez: 10:02 PM those were all the producers

brendanloy: 10:02 PM credits roll at 10:03 (that was the tiebreaker in our office pool)

brendanloy: 10:02 PM and I think 10:03 was my exact guess

brendanloy: 10:02 PM but I lose by 1 point anyway

gahrie: 10:02 PM actually…there is a soldier claiming that The Hurt Locker is a ripoff of his story

J Freeze: 10:02 PM Bring on the NCAA and NIT Pools!!!!!!

Doc: 10:02 PM Bye-bye, got some 3rd graders to entertain.

Seth: 10:03 PM vimeo.com

brendanloy: 10:03 PM i’ll be right back, folks… for those who leave while I’m gone, good night, thanks for stopping by, come back in a week for the Selection Sunday liveblog!!

gahrie: 10:03 PM see you in the BB pools

Mark Van Lommel: 10:04 PM awesome event, thanks for hosting Brendan. see you guys next year!

Lisa: 10:04 PM Does anyone know anything about the soldier who is supposedly suing?

Alec: 10:05 PM Someone on TV just described the Vanity Fair after-party as “Woodstock for billionaires.” I think that might just be the most depressing thing I have ever heard.

Vicki Lopez: 10:05 PM what do you want to know, Lisa

J Freeze: 10:06 PM Good Night from Indiana!

brendanloy: 10:06 PM CNN Breaking News — ‘The Hurt Locker’ has won the Oscar for best picture at the 82nd annual Academy Awards.

brendanloy: 10:07 PM CNN projects that The Hurt Locker, Hurt Locker, has won, has won, best picture

Alec: 10:07 PM …right now

brendanloy: 10:07 PM Good night Jeff, and congrats!

brendanloy: 10:09 PM

brendanloy: 10:09 PM That’s the Pocohontas/Avatar mashup Seth posted

Vicki Lopez: 10:12 PM Goodnight everyone, thanks for the fun chatting!

Alec: 10:13 PM Bye Vicki!

brendanloy: 10:13 PM Same to you, Vicki! And with that, I’m going to sign off too. Good night everyone, and again, thanks for stopping by! Like I said, let’s do it again, Selection Sunday, starting around 3:45 PM Mountain Time 🙂

Alec: 10:13 PM Ok – glad to have caught the end of this – great job as always Brendan, thanks for the platform!

brendanloy: 10:13 PM *Selection Sunday is next Sunday, for those who don’t consider it a national holiday, as I do 🙂
