Maybe instead of pretending that climate change is some sort of liberal conspiracy the GOP should come up with an alternative to offer.

    1) Global warming (or as it is now called “climate change”) is a liberal conspiracy. It is a not very transparent attempt to control the U.S. economy. It is also interesting to note how many prominent leftists are postioned to make millions (or billions) off of carbon trading and other “green” initatives created by this bill.

    2) The alternative to do this bill is to NOT PASS THE BILL.

    3) Even if you believe in man made climate change, this bill does almost nothing to fix the problem. There is a reason why even environmental groups oppose this bill. What it does do is drastically raise the cost of energy for everyone, and pass out government money to those favored by the Democrats.

    4) Even if you think this is a good bill and should be passed, surely you have to realize that the process is deeply flawed and dangerous. Didn’t we learn earlier this year the folly of passing a bill that no one has read yet?

Gary, you lost all credibility at point one. There is overwhelming scientific evidence that supports global climate change and the fact that humanity is contributing to it.

    David:

You have responded exactly the way you Chicken Littles on the Left always do. The fact is, the science is not settled. In fact, the Obama administration and other leftists are busy surpressing scientists who disagree with “climate change”. There is a reason Speaker Pelosi disinvited Al Gore to the Congressional hearings….even she realizes that his routine has grown stale and thin.

Now, since you are a Chicken Little , how about we frame the rest of my points about this watermelon of a bill (environmentally green on the outside but economically red at the core) as a hypothetical for you (pretend climate change is the crock it really is) and have you address the rest of my points?

gahrie, i’ll let Mike tackle the heavy science here, but suffice it to say that sticking your fingers in your ears and saying “nah nah nah its not true nah nah nah” isn’t going to get the GOP anywhere. The evidence is overwhelmingly supportive of this, and while there is no way you can ever prove it 100% and there will ALWAYS be fringe people who dispute it (there are still people who think the Earth isn’t round) doesn’t mean we are going to listen to them.

As long as the right wing continues to treat this as some vast left-wing conspiracy and not as a real problem to be faced, they are going to be impotent on the issue and powerless to enact legislation that might be more to their liking. All or nothing is a bad strategy but it seems like its the only one the right wing is interested in. With us or against us indeed.

    1) Global Warming stopped in 2001, and the Earth has been cooling since then, (which is why it’s called climate change now) interestingly enough, this corresponds to the collapse of the sunspot cycle.

    2) There is mounting evidence that all of the data that led some to believe the Earth was warming was due to selective data collection. For instance, studies omit Canada’s data, and there is quite a bit of controversey about which weather stations in the U.S. are included in studies.

    3) There is a scientist who has been studying polar bears for 30+ years whose report is being surpressed and ignored because it shows that polar bear populations are not in crisis, and a scientist who is a career employee of the government who wrote a report detailing the sloddy science of “climate change” who also has his report being surpressed.

    4) If climate change is such a slam dunk, why was this bill rushed through the House with no ability for the public to know what is actually in it?

I like the idea of a carbon emission restriction because I think it could do a lot to improve air quality. Air pollution sucks and it makes us sick. It’s a side effect of the bill, but one I’d welcome with open arms.

I’m also not sure that I buy the fear tactics that this bill will cost the economy ginormous amounts of money. If we all have to pay $50 to decrease our dependence on foreign oil by encouraging the growth of alternative energy, I’m willing to do that as my patriotic duty.

So in conclusion, gahrie, you hate America and want us all to die of lung cancer. 😛

    1) You realize that every animal in existence emits carbon gas right? You also realize that carbon gas is required by every plant for survival right? Don’t you find it at least a little ridiculous that the government has declared carbon dioxide a pollutant and is trying to regulate it? I

    2) Air pollution in the United States (even here in So. Calif.) is better than it has ever been, and better than almost anywhere else in the world. Those dramatic pictures of gas coming from factories you see are largely steam.

    3) President Obama has himself openly stated that the primary purpose of this bill is to make energy more expensive, particularly coal (where most of our electricity comes from). Every estimate of this bill’s costs I have seen range from several hundred dollars to over a thousand dollars annually for the average family.

    4) This bill is not about promoting alternative energy, it is about regulating fossil fuels. The only support for alternative energy are the bribes for ethanol producers used to bribe the farm state senators for their support.

    5) I support the promotion of true alternative energy (ethanol is an expensive boondoggle and most studies show it results in a larger carbon footprint than oil…and also raises food prices on the poor). How many nuclear power plants do you support? We could build quickly and safely build several pebble bed reactors anyday. I think we should be pouring many more millions into Polywell fusion. How come those on the left are so busy opposing wind farms?

    6) Every country in the world that has instituted similar programs to those in this bill has regretted it, and are quickly (or have already) repealed them.

    7) I would counter that the Left hates America and wants to turn us into a Third World economy and dratically lower the standard of living of the American people. (except that of our hard working leaders of course..some animals are more equal than others)
