Week 3 live-tweeting

I don’t plan on doing a “liveblog” per se — but any tweets I might post about today’s college football action, or anything else for that matter, will appear in the Cover It Live window at below left. And if anybody happens to stop by and feels like chatting, you can do so here, or after the jump. (You may want to consider chatting in pirate-speak, today being Talk Like A Pirate Day, but I’ll leave that decision to you… arrr.)

BEAT THE HUSKIES! and CRUSH SPARTY! (Have I mentioned that I hate Sparty?)

Er, ahem… AVAST! WALK THE PLANK, YE SCURVY HUSKY DOGS! and TO THE POOP DECK, SPARTY!

Been thinking this afternoon that part of the blame for Eastern America disregarding the Pac-10 has to lie with Pac-10 fans, specifically the way they (like all college fans) get hepped up about their rivalries. The difference is that the Pac-10 has 5 bitter rivalries.

I mean if I don’t follow the Pac-10 that closely, and every comment about UCLA from a Trojan fan is “UCLA sucks, dude!” what shall I conclude? That UCLA sucks. My impression is that you get that across all the Pac-10 rivalries.

This is not to say that the same thing doesn’t happen elsewhere (looking at you, state of Michigan). But it’s not as widespread. For example, speaking of Michigan, my impression is that most Big Ten fans really wanted MSU to defeat UNC in last year’s National Championship game, for Big Ten pride – even many Wolverine fans.

Or another: have you ever heard a non-Florida SEC fan tear down the Gators? Me neither.

By contrast, if UCLA were playing UNC in a National Championship, one gets the sense that Trojan fans would root for UCLA to lose by 50. If UCLA did, the Trojan faithful would celebrate raucously and remind the rest of the country of their rivals’ failing.

Which is fun, and stuff, but it kinda tends to diminish your conference in the eyes of outsiders.

Are you kidding me? Maryland loses to Middle Tennessee State at home? For the second year in a frickin’ ROW? It was bad enough losing to Middle Tennessee State in Murfresbro last year. But to lose to them at home is just unacceptable. Why do I bother with this team? I’m not even from here!

    E-gad.

Yeah. That Maryland game was absolutely pitiful. They made so many mistakes it wasn’t funny. They lost the ball on three drives in a row due to stupid fumbles. The defensive coverage was terrible.

So yeah, they lost the game by a point with 2 seconds left. :/

The only plus side is I had absolutely awesome seats, second row up on the 35 yard line, on the visiting side. So I got the amusement of all the drunken heckling. The highlight was someone yelling at a player with “Padrick” on his jersey that he spelled his name wrong.
