Notre Dame coaching decision pool

Okay, time for a little blog prediction contest…

QUESTION: Who will be the head coach of Notre Dame’s football team next season?

TIEBREAKER #1: On what date will Notre Dame announce its decision with respect to Charlie Weis?

TIEBREAKER #2: On what date will Notre Dame announce Weis’s replacement (if applicable)?

TIEBREAKER #3: What will be the margin of victory/defeat against Stanford? (Negative numbers for an Irish loss, positive numbers for a win.)

Deadline to enter is kickoff of the Stanford game, or when Charlie gets canned, whichever comes first.

    QUESTION: Bob Stoops
TIEBREAKER #1: November 29 (Sorry, Big Man. Football comes before the Sabbath)
TIEBREAKER #2: January 1 (Even if OU wins Bedlam, don’t see it playing in January)
    TIEBREAKER #3: -13

    QUESTION: Jon Gruden
TIEBREAKER #1: November 29 (I really want to say Saturday evening though)
    TIEBREAKER #2: December 9
TIEBREAKER #3: -31 (a couple 2 point conversions could bump this to 34)

    QUESTION: Charlie Weis

    TIEBREAKER #2: N/A
    TIEBREAKER #3: +7

Comments are not required, but a few thoughts:

    1) Weis’ buyout may be an albatross
    2) Kelly apparently has some baggage of the Larry Eustachy variety (i.e. Why were you at that sorority event, coach?)
    3) Meyer/Stoops/other big name coaches maybe unavailable – or at a cost that is prohibitive in light of Weis’ buyout, and
    4) Weis’ failing at Notre Dame doesn’t come with an appropriate-sized parachute. Willingham had a National Championship-Winning BCS team to land at, Davie seems to enjoy his weekly gig pontificating about the Tulsa/UTEP game or whatever, and Faust was just happy to be there.

But what of Weis? Going back to a coordinator job is probably too big a step down from here – even an NFL coordinator, but I’m not sure even a program of Washington’s caliber would be interested in him. As such, I expect Weis will not go gentle into that good night (well…he already hasn’t).

It’s a step down for Weis to be an OC? Maybe, but who would want him as a head coach? Especially if you’re an NFL team. He proved without a doubt that he can’t be a head coach over the past 5 years, so you’re going to bring him in to coach an NFL team? That’s crazy. I wouldn’t even want him as an OC. It’s obvious that Bellichick could have had a broom handle as his OC at New England and still won those Superbowls.

    Sandy –

Exactly. No 1-A/NFL team would want him as head coach, but anything less than head coach of prestige 1-A school would seem like too giant a step down to Weis. A dilemma, the result of which should be that Weis leaves ND kicking and screaming…if at all….

    I’m changing my vote.

    QUESTION: Bob Stoops
    TIEBREAKER #1: Monday, November 30
    TIEBREAKER #2: Monday, December 7
    TIEBREAKER #3: -6

I’ve said all along that, despite what Bodog might think, Stoops is by far the more likely “Hail Mary” pick than Urban Meyer. Now there are some unsourced reports of mutual interest. That’s good enough for me. GOOO IRISH, HIIIRE STOOPS!!!

Actually, since Oklahoma doesn’t have a game on December 5, let’s make it:

    QUESTION: Bob Stoops
    TIEBREAKER #1: Monday, November 30
    TIEBREAKER #2: Thursday, December 3
    TIEBREAKER #3: -6

Should have stuck with your original pick Brendan, looks like I’m gonna win this one 🙂 You would have beat me at the first tie-breaker.
