We* don’t want Stoops. I would rank potential coaches this way with the actual chance that ND hires this person in parantheses:

    1) John Gruden (5%)
    2) Urban Meyer (10%)
    3) Nick Saban (0%)
    4) Brian Billick (7%)
    5) Bob Stoops (15%)
    6) Brian Kelley (UC)(40%)
    7) Pat Fitzgerald (10%)
    8) Jim Harbaugh (13%)

We want someone who has been a successful head coach, with a proven ability to surround himself with quality assistants, and who “gets” ND the way that Weis did (recruiting, grad rates, etc.). I think Gruden is the best prospect under this criteria, especially because he’s still young and energetic enough to deal with the pressures involved. But I am yet to hear why/if he is interested- TV pays almost as well and is 10 times more enjoyable.

ND needs to make a splash, and Brian Kelley (who has yet to beat a Top 10 team) is not it.

Interesting perspective clayne, but I think the odds that the Irish get Urban Meyer are less than those of getting Nick Saban. Why would he leave Florida where he is a hero with a perenial National Championship contender, huge recruiting advantage in the state, for a struggling Notre Dame? Why would he leave sunny Florida for dismal South Bend?

Maybe he REALLY likes a challange and is bored at Florida? Doesn’t seem like it.
Maybe he is a REALLY strong Catholic who wants to help out Notre Dame? Had that chance allready.
Maybe he REALLY loves money and Notre Dame will pay him a lot? Seems to be doing pretty darn well in Florida.

I just don’t see it happening. In fact, I think the odds of re-hiring Lou Holtz are better.

I don’t see it either. But Urban has the chance to do what Bear, Bowden, JoePa, and Woody never did- win a national championship at two different schools. Urban going to ND and winning makes him the greatest coach of all time, not just one of the greatest coaches. Not everyone has that opportunity.
