I’m not sure if you clicked through to the linked article, but its basic point is that even if, against the odds, Brown wins, the Dems will still have options to get HCR passed, most notably Mickey Kaus’s preferred “ping pong” strategy.

I did. While I’m a pessimist, I’m optimistic with respect to the “ping pong” strategy in that I doubt House Dems — particularly the more liberal ones — will be willing to give up their control of the process. I agree with Kaus that this is not a conventional circumstance, but in they end I don’t think the House Dems can help themselves.

For David’s benefit, one of us has to say – “But it’s the Kennedy Seat !” …

I’ve discussed this elsewhere..it effectively has been the Kennedy seat as far as Washington insiders like Gergen are concerned.

John was elected to it in 1952. (he took office in Jan 1953)

He held the seat until he was elected president. The Kennedy clan chose Ben Smith to hold the seat for two years until Ted turned 30. (minimum age to serve in the Senate)

Ted took the seat in 1962 and held it until he died last year, and the Kennedy clan again handpicked his successor.

They have owned that seat for 56 years…….
