NCAA Tourney Day 4 live-tweeting

11 Comments on NCAA Tourney Day 4 live-tweeting

Rather than allow my homepage to be overrun by tweets again today, I’m going to funnel everything into this window. To comment, either click “Make a comment,” or tweet something @brendanloy.

In addition to my tweets, any tweets from a bunch of Gonzaga bloggers, and other college-hoops bloggers, will also auto-post.

P.S. Loyette says, “Go Zags!”

UPDATE: I’m changing the title of this post from “Go Zags!!! Beat ‘Cuse!!!” because, after the humiliating beatdown I just witnessed, that glimpse of once-high hopes is just too depressing.

UPDATE 2: After the jump, a complete transcript of the live-tweeting.

Brendan, forget about the basketball; Wolf Blitzer has been on duty for hours on CNN and is repeating just about everything – and the “right now” count is approaching triple figures.

    This is vintage, unmissable stuff.

What a day for the mid-majors. Today right there is the reason not to expand to 96 teams: Northern Iowa, Butler, Xavier, Cornell and St. Mary’s are all still in, and all the also-ran big-conference teams (except Washington) are done: Georgia Tech, Florida, Missouri, Minnesota.

But please, let’s have 32 more of them clogging up the brackets.

What a day for the mid-majors. Today right there is the reason not to expand to 96 teams:

Its not clear to me that the 96-team tournament would be worse for the mid-majors than the current version. Of the five mid-majors listed, two (Xavier and Butler) wouldn’t play an additional game in the 96 team tournament, and two others (Northern Iowa and St. Mary’s) would have an extra game against a lame, Arkansas-Pine Bluff-type opponent.

Given the fact that formerly intimidating #1/#2-seed type teams will have to play an extra, occasionally challenging game against a #17/#18-seeded opponent, who will often be a power conference mediocrity, that will mean more road blocks for elite power conference teams, which should help mid-majors (unless they end up being the additional road block).

In conclusion, it isn’t at all clear that the 96-team field hurts the mid-major, indeed, from where I sit it seems more likely to help them.

Also, one of the things that has frustrated Gonzaga this past decade is that the West Coast Conference sort of holds them back. Aspiring to be a top program requires bringing in top talent, which is challenging for Gonzaga given the competitive landscape. (In this regard, St. Mary’s Sweet 16 run is a help to Gonzaga).

And while purists roll their eyes at the thought of a mediocre 4th-place WCC team being on the bubble of a 96-team field, more NCAA tournament slots may end up being much more effective than Gonzaga’s pleas in getting the other 7 WCC schools to be more competitive.

The 96-team field may end up being a huge help to the mid-majors, actually.

It depends on your definition of “help,” Jazz. As things now stand, a team like Murray State or Ohio can feel like its season was a success simply by virtue of winning a single game in the NCAA Tournament — fans of the Racers and the Bobcats will be talking for YEARS about that time they hit a buzzer-beater to beat the third-best team in the SEC / dominated the Big East runner-up. Those sorts of wins capture the nation’s imagination, make the Tournament special, and give the “little guys” a truly memorable platform. Heck, even Robert Morris fans won’t soon forget how they ALMOST topped mighty Villanova.

Now, imagine a 96-team tournament. Robert Morris would’ve been a #23 seed, matched up against a #10 seed like perhaps Georgia Tech. Would “OMG we almost beat mighty Georgia Tech” have the same resonance? Ohio would’ve been a #22, matched up against a #11 seed like perhaps San Diego State. Same question: would dominating SDSU go down in program lore, and earn national recognition, like dominating Georgetown? And Murray State… their seeding in a 96-team field is a bit harder to figure, since some of the new at-large teams might be below them, so let’s say they’d have been a #18 seed, matchup against one of the new #15s like, oh I don’t know, Seton Hall or UAB, perhaps. Doesn’t Murray’s “One Shining Moment” buzzer beater lose a bit of its luster if it comes against, not a #4 seed with dark-horse Final Four ambitions, but a 9-9 or 8-10 type Big East/ACC team, or a third-place C-USA team, or whatever?

Of course, those teams can earn dates with better opponents… a tired Murray State would have a shot against a rested Villanova-type team two days after beating Seton Hall, Ohio would get to play somebody like Tennessee and THEN maybe a Georgetown — and if they can win all three, they can reach the Sweet 16 — and Robert Morris, after knocking off Georgia Tech, would perhaps get to play… Richmond! Or BYU! Or Oklahoma State! OMG! And THEN maybe Villanova (or Murray, if the Racers managed to pull the double-upset).

Before I get lost in the weeds, let’s return to the bottom line… this might mean more mid-major wins, yes, but it also might mean that early-round mid-major wins lose a lot of their meaning and luster and specialness.

Brendan, as an aside, a while back you tweeted something about how the NCAA tourney shows how the BCS system is a complete fraud or some such.

I’ll admit that the tourney is certainly entertaining, but my guess is that entertainment is why they do it rather than a sense of “these 64 teams really deserve a shot at being crowned national champion. Its probably also why they want to expand to 96 teams. Not out of some egalitarian sense that these teams are being screwed (although that discussion does seem to come up every year, same as with the BCS, and just like the BCS there is some commitee that uses semi-secret criteria to determine who makes it or not) but because they can make more money.

If they can make money off the 96 team tournament, my guess is they will do it. And admit it, you’ll still watch it, you’ll still do pools about it, you’ll still blog obsesively about it 🙂

For me, the interesting thing about mid-majors is the possibility of schools/teams/players that were small becoming big. Sort of like the gospels: the last shall be first, and the first shall be list. I’ve largely resisted the mid-major fooferau mainly because too much interest in mid-majors seems to be motivated by the same thing that causes big city folks to patronize a townie bar. (The motivation is essentially the desire to patronize).

To this end, it is curious to me that the most dominant team of the past 35 years came from a non-power conference, their championship was an annihilation of arguably the most pedigreed power conference team, and yet this fact seems not to endear many among mid-major fans. Additionally, one of (if not the) best college players of the last 35 years left another highly pedigreed program to bring a mid-major to glory, and this fact too seems not to move the mid-major lovers. These data points would seem to suggest that hangin’ with the mid-majors is a lot like hangin’ with the townies, as opposed to a desire for the mid-majors to rise up.

So anyway, in this conversation – for non-power conference programs that are closing in on elite status and carrying a seed higher than 8 (Xavier, Gonzaga) the 96-team tournament is probably a help, since it is more likely to knock out obstacles to a deep tournament run. By contrast, for low-mid major programs like Murray State, looking for that one shining moment of being patronized by the college basketball fan base, the 96-team tournament is certainly a hindrance to such sentiment.
