greggdoyelcbs: 5:00 PM Lookie lookie RT @Deuce_Shoes: @greggdoyelcbs I’m in for 100 if the Cats win it all. 200 if I win my office pool.

TheBigLead: 5:02 PM Love the NCAA Tournament, but gotta go w/ World Cup RT @SI_ChrisBallard Better sporting event: NCAA Tourney or World Cup?

BracketDobber: 5:03 PM LET’S GO ORANGE! RT @Moiso13: SHUT IT DOWN!!!!

Mark_Schlabach: 5:03 PM Pat Riley in the house in Salt Lake

Mark_Schlabach: 5:03 PM So is Jim Harrick

brendanloy: 5:04 PM @ballybasketball BOING BOING BOING!

RealJayWilliams: 5:04 PM How do you think Syracuse will play without Onuaku down low?

Mark_Schlabach: 5:06 PM Plenty of open seats in Salt Lake City

greggdoyelcbs: 5:08 PM I don’t believe it. Syracuse opens in a ZONE

brendanloy: 5:08 PM If Butler makes Elite 8, very tempted to drive there for Sat. Alas, $ and kids 🙂 RT @Mark_Schlabach: Plenty of open seats in Salt Lake City

greggdoyelcbs: 5:09 PM These teams are as tight as Roger Goodell’s sphincter

JohnGasaway: 5:10 PM Much easier to “hold Syracuse to *one* tough shot” with Onuaku out.

Mark_Schlabach: 5:11 PM Butler’s defense about as ferocious as Syracuse’s 2-3 in early minutes. 3 straight turnovers for Cuse

greggdoyelcbs: 5:11 PM I take it back. Only Syracuse is as tight as the sphincter

BracketDobber: 5:12 PM Wow. Orange look unbelievably lazy right now. Offense very off.

greggdoyelcbs: 5:13 PM Butler and Syracuse are shooting more air than a pellet gun. Or something. But they suck at the moment

theupsetblog: 5:13 PM Butler should be up 10-0 with this start. Not taking advantage of lackadaisical Cuse effort.

RealJayWilliams: 5:14 PM One of the misconceptions on #Cuse is that they get the ball down low a lot. Jackson barely get touches. The #Cuse is a jump shooting team.

Mark_Schlabach: 5:16 PM Butler’s Ronald Nored really hounding Rautins off and on the ball

BracketDobber: 5:16 PM I hope they had caffeine available in the Orange huddle. Jeez!

theupsetblog: 5:17 PM RT @pac10buster: Oregon State to play BYU in home (Corvallis/2011) and home (Provo/2012).

Mark_Schlabach: 5:18 PM Cuse goes first six mins w/o FG. Boeheim calls timeout after Hayward 3 makes it 10-1

aglock: 5:19 PM The afternoon snack is not working out well for the Cuse so far. Sleepy start for the Orange, sweet start for the Bulldogs

JohnGasaway: 5:19 PM “Highly uncharacteristic”? Turnovers virtually equal for ‘Cuse and their opponents in BE play.

Mark_Schlabach: 5:19 PM Obviously, Cuse having more problems with Butler D than vice versa at this point. Dogs knocking down 3s

theupsetblog: 5:19 PM The Butler looked at Gus Johnson’s face, the 1st Two Rounds of sorrow still fresh on his face, and decided to take adv of Cuse energy.

BracketDobber: 5:19 PM This game is going to make me drink…even more than normal.

rushthecourt: 5:20 PM SLC: small but vocal Butler crowd on their feet early. Cuse looks slow.

DanWetzel: 5:21 PM With Syracuse University playing at same time, Carrier Dome isn’t much for environment as WVU-UW tips. Maybe a 1/3 full

greggdoyelcbs: 5:22 PM Syracuse is making my sphincter analogy look really, really good

Mark_Schlabach: 5:22 PM Cuse is 0-4 on FGs with 5 TOs

TheBigLead: 5:22 PM Butler’s MVP in the first 7 mins: the guy face-guarding Rautins. Totally taken him out of the game. Can’t get open. Where’s Wes?

theupsetblog: 5:22 PM SLC isnt Provo my man!! Haha. RT @BracketDobber: I hope they had caffeine available in the Orange huddle. Jeez!

theupsetblog: 5:23 PM BYU and Oregon St agree to home-&-home 2011-12. is.gd BYU plays at Texas and at Oregon State in 2011. #gobigorgohome

RealJayWilliams: 5:23 PM Give your picks for tonight…. RT @Revis24: Who watchin the games tonite?

aglock: 5:23 PM If this were Aussie Rules Football, Butler would have two goals and Syracuse one behind.

Mark_Schlabach: 5:23 PM Rick Jackson finally scores FG for Cuse

    aglock: 5:23 PM Butler 2-0, Syracuse 0-1

TheHoopsReport: 5:23 PM Matt Howard’s porn star mustache – cool or not cool?

greggdoyelcbs: 5:23 PM My Twitter connection is almost as bad as Syracuse’s offense

midmajority: 5:24 PM Syracuse only had a rouge to show for its first seven minutes. #canadianstylefootball

theupsetblog: 5:24 PM Butler only shooting 4/11 …. Cuse just awful on offense. awful.

aglock: 5:24 PM Butler looks like it’s seen a 2-3 zone before.

rushthecourt: 5:25 PM SLC: SU trying to force it inside. Need Rautins to open it up.

greggdoyelcbs: 5:26 PM Refs missed that. Right in front of me. Off Hayward. Rautins saw it and he’s pissed

greggdoyelcbs: 5:28 PM Twitter Status, there is a problem – don’t panic. I’M PANICKING

    brendanloy: 5:28 PM Sweet 16 live-tweeting ff.im

ballinisahabit: 5:28 PM Interesting. Huggins started Casey Mitchell instead of Mazzulla.

goodmanonfox: 5:29 PM Bob Huggins opts to start Casey Mitchell – a shooter.

tsnmike: 5:29 PM Interesting choice: Huggs starts Casey Mitchell instead of Mazzulla. He’ll be in soon enough.

aglock: 5:30 PM The game in SLC started at 5:07pm local time. Not fan friendly. RT @MrTRiseAndFire: The crowds on TV look embarrassing at both arenas.

Mark_Schlabach: 5:30 PM Cuse has extended its zone a bit and Butler hasn’t looked good last two trips

greggdoyelcbs: 5:30 PM Hayward gets into the zone and won’t shoot it. Let ‘er rip, son.

goodmanonfox: 5:31 PM Sitting next to Greg Paulus right now, my intern for the weekend. Trying to get into college hoops coaching.

RealJayWilliams: 5:31 PM Everyone making such a big deal that #WVU lost PG Darryl Bryant but Da’Sean Butler can do it all. #WVU will get by #Washington.

Mark_Schlabach: 5:31 PM Rick Jackson just picked up 2nd PF. Cuse has only one big on bench with Onuaku out

SethDavisHoops: 5:32 PM Just said on CBS Syracuse is cautiously optimistic Onuaku would be available for Final Four, though prob not 100%. Gotta get by Butler 1st.

greggdoyelcbs: 5:32 PM Two fouls Hayward. That’s no good for Butler. He’s out. Yikes.

theupsetblog: 5:32 PM Bob Huggins Soprano jumpsuit looks much better in Syracuse than Morgantown. Now if he could migrate to Rutgers all would be right in da World

Mark_Schlabach: 5:32 PM Hayward just went to bench with his second PF, too. Nine mins to go

ballinisahabit: 5:33 PM Is “Onions” appropriate for TV?: Bill Raftery is a nut. He’s like your crazy uncle. The one at all the family reuni… bit.ly

greggdoyelcbs: 5:33 PM Can only send. Can’t read. If you’re talking to me, I’m ignoring you but not on purpose. Maybe.

tsnmike: 5:33 PM First sub off bench for WVU: Dalton Pepper, in for Mitchell. Huggs will try to keep Mazzulla’s minutes down until needed.

    BracketDobber: 5:33 PM 8 turnovers, 8 points?

TomJolly: 5:33 PM Hoping to channel my inner @LewisHowes while speaking at #NYPA conference in Albany on Fri. Anyone here going?

SethDavisHoops: 5:33 PM Member of Syracuse’s coaching staff told me their biggest concern was Butler’s halfcourt D. Lotta turnovers early.

greggdoyelcbs: 5:34 PM Refs decided they like Syracuse. Interesting.

JohnGasaway: 5:34 PM Heard! Approve! RT @jscottfitzwater Elmore with defensive rebounding %! Did you heard that, @JohnGasaway?

tsnmike: 5:34 PM Now, he’s needed. Two straight WVU TOs advancing ball. Mazzulla in at 16:03.

ballinisahabit: 5:35 PM RT @SethDavisHoops: Just said on CBS Syracuse is cautiously optimistic Onuaku would be available for Final Four, though prob not 100%.

TheBigLead: 5:35 PM would be nice if MMOD was working for the Wash-WVU game … hey CBS, you guys on this?

brendanloy: 5:35 PM Butler up early over Syracuse, but ESPN Radio is broadcasting the UW-WVU game, which is 4-2 Huskies at first TV timeout. Ugh. #itsawar

Mark_Schlabach: 5:35 PM That would be nine turnovers for Cuse at 7:36 to go

greggdoyelcbs: 5:36 PM Hello, lost and found? I’m looking for WES JOHNSON

rushthecourt: 5:37 PM SU really struggling with TOs so far. No clean passes. Crowd very flat here.

Mark_Schlabach: 5:37 PM Because of those 9 TOs, Butler has taken 19 shots to Cuse’ 9 so far

Mark_Schlabach: 5:38 PM Onuaku gives Jackson an ear-ful of advice coming out of timeout

greggdoyelcbs: 5:39 PM Mack killing Cuse just inside that first layer of zone. Killing ’em.

    greggdoyelcbs: 5:39 PM See!!!!!!!!!!!!

greggdoyelcbs: 5:39 PM Damn I’m good. If I were 6-8 I’d be Jay Bilas. And if I had more hair. And was smarter …

greggdoyelcbs: 5:40 PM Rautins is a whiner. Just noting. 14 minutes into the game and I’m onto that knucklehead

theupsetblog: 5:41 PM Interesting. CBS sends SLC market to Wash/WV. Without a squad in the Sweet 16 close to home…why not let us watch the game playing IN SLC?

JohnGasaway: 5:41 PM Butler’s shot chart should be put on a t-shirt for every team about to play Syracuse. Wearing out the middle of the zone.

greggdoyelcbs: 5:42 PM Mack is taking over this crowd. They LOVE him here in SLC.

aglock: 5:42 PM Yup. RT @JohnGasaway: Butler’s shot chart should be on a t-shirt for every team about to play Syracuse. Wearing out the middle of the zone.

theupsetblog: 5:43 PM omg, we get it! Andy Rautins has a dad named Leo who also played at Cuse and a little in the NBA! I THINK WE HEARD THE LAST 3542 TIMES!

aglock: 5:44 PM That was weird. The ref looked like he was starting to call a foul with arm raised, but got knocked OB and Cuse put the follow in for 2.

greggdoyelcbs: 5:44 PM Since Hayward went out with 2F, Butler has outscored ‘Cuse 16-11. Wow.

aglock: 5:45 PM Gus Johnson saying “Vanzant” should be bottled for awesomeness.

Mark_Schlabach: 5:45 PM Shawn Vanzant’s 3 from left corner makes it 31-19. Another Cuse TO. Every time Cuse gets closer, Butler answers

TheBigLead: 5:45 PM syracuse officially in trouble. Butler only 3-of-11 from deep, but many open looks. those start to fall & SU can’t solve this M-to-M D …

theupsetblog: 5:46 PM RT @realfreemancbs: Huggins to forward Wellington Smith: “A f—— midget is whipping your ass.” I will be laughing at that quote for t …

greggdoyelcbs: 5:46 PM No kidding. What the hell’s wrong with me?RT @delmarheel: @greggdoyelcbs Dude, you talk alot of shit.

PeteThamelNYT: 5:46 PM RT @BrettmcmurphY: 12 combined turnovers in first 7 minutes in the Carrier Dome. Kind of resembles a Syracuse football game

brendanloy: 5:46 PM Butler 31, Syracuse 21. Love it. GO BULLDOGS!

SethDavisHoops: 5:46 PM How about Butler starting out shooting 38.5% and 3-11 from three….and leading by 10. Memo to Cuse: Value. The. Ball.

rushthecourt: 5:47 PM SLC: Cuse unprepared for Butler defense? Lots of hesitation and poor decisions so far.

theupsetblog: 5:47 PM hahaha the look on Boeheim’s face after the Mack 3. translated: are you guys really losing to these hoosier hicks? REALLY?

aglock: 5:47 PM I’m really impressed/surprised by Butler’s effectiveness inside the arc so far. Cuse in a good deal of trouble if that doesn’t stop.

greggdoyelcbs: 5:47 PM Butler without Hayward and now Mack. They have to rest but still …

aglock: 5:47 PM RT @Big12HoopsBlog: @aglock that ref is Mark Whitehead, and every rule is open to interpretation at any time with him on the baseline

Mark_Schlabach: 5:48 PM That was Butler’s first turnover of the half. Up 31-21 at last media timeout. 3:25 to go

greggdoyelcbs: 5:48 PM Shelvin Mack (Lexington) is great. How did Tubby and Billy G not get this kid?

brendanloy: 5:48 PM 16 1/2 minutes into the game, Butler just committed its first turnover. #midswin

    mom2twinsplus1: 5:48 PM @brendanloy WOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ballinisahabit: 5:49 PM When WVU gets their defense set, Wash cannot score. Turnovers and long boards leading to breaks and easy buckets

ballinisahabit: 5:50 PM Syracuse is surprising me more. You knew Butler would play hard, smart. Waiting for Wes Johnson to decide to play.

ballinisahabit: 5:51 PM RT @SethDavisHoops: How about Butler starting out shooting 38.5% and 3-11 from three….and leading by 10. Memo to Cuse: Value. The. Ball.

DanWetzel: 5:51 PM There are strip mined mountains that aren’t as ugly as WVU’s offense.

TheBigLead: 5:52 PM 17 minutes, 10 turnovers, 7 FG. That’s what’s Syracuse has done so far against Butler. Could be a bad night for the Big East (WVU losing)

Mark_Schlabach: 5:52 PM Matt Howard just picked up his 2nd PF with 2 mins to go

PeteThamelNYT: 5:53 PM We are mass live blogging the Round of 16 here. We have on-site and off commentary here…. nyti.ms

greggdoyelcbs: 5:53 PM This is UNI vs. Kansas, all over again

TheBigLead: 5:53 PM Andy Rautins body language: angry and frustrated. This defense getting to him. Can’t get open, can’t get his shot. SU in deep trouble

greggdoyelcbs: 5:54 PM Um, refs are making it up to Butler. Holy cow …

Mark_Schlabach: 5:55 PM Butler by 10 at the half. Cuse did not look good, to say the least

PeteThamelNYT: 5:55 PM This WVU-Washington game has all the atmosphere of a 16 vs. 1 game where both teams are 2,000 miles from campus. Wash up 12-10, 7:51 left

aglock: 5:55 PM That was a really crummy half of basketball for Cuse. Butler had something to do with it, but that was just sloppy. Slow, bad decisions, imo

BracketDobber: 5:55 PM Painful. Excruciatingly so. RT @NunesMagician: Worst half of the season. Bar none. Crazy.

    Mark_Schlabach: 5:55 PM That’s a season-low in 1st half points for Cuse

theupsetblog: 5:55 PM did he really just say “are they losing it in the lights” ??? the lights are in the ceiling you dummy.

TheBigLead: 5:56 PM Butler 35, Syracuse 25 at the half. Largest halftime deficit this yr. 8 baskets, 12 turnovers. I don’t see the ‘Cuse winning this one

aglock: 5:56 PM Is CBS restricted from switching to the WVU-UW game at this time because it’s NC-17 content?

ballinisahabit: 5:57 PM Last play defines the half for Cuse: Mack bobbles the ball on a breakaway, has time to gather himself, makes the layup. Hustle back maybe?

greggdoyelcbs: 5:57 PM Mariotti next to me on press row. But he’s inside watching games on TV. Jeez.

ballinisahabit: 5:57 PM RT @JustinDYoung: Does Wesley Johnson realize he’s being watched by people with bank accounts in Switzerland? C’mon man…play like a pro

rushthecourt: 5:57 PM SLC: As bad a half as we’ve seen from the Orange this yr. Butler not letting Rautins get looks and denying all entry passes.

aglock: 5:59 PM Wow, did all the Kentucky (and Cornell???) fans just decide to show up at 9:30pm? Dome is empty.

ballinisahabit: 5:59 PM Butler is up 10 at the half, and is shooting 40% from the floor. Who saw that coming?

TheBigLead: 5:59 PM Iowa should wait until Butler loses to Kansas State Saturday and offer Brad Stevens the coaching job. Brilliant def game plan 2nite

JohnGasaway: 5:59 PM I know the score doesn’t reflect it, but Washington is scoring on every trip right now.

aglock: 6:00 PM So who else had potential Butler-Xavier and Cornell-Washington regional finals?

aglock: 6:01 PM Kidding aside, the composition of this Final Four may have an impact on whether the NCAA opts out of its TV deal.

ballinisahabit: 6:01 PM RT @raphiellej: Norm Roberts doing the MMOD Halftime Show with @JonRothstein and Jason Horowitz.

goodmanonfox: 6:02 PM Justin Holiday’s brother, NBA rookie Jrue, watching in Washington section. myloc.me

ballinisahabit: 6:02 PM RT @goodmanonfox: Justin Holiday’s brother, NBA rookie Jrue, watching in Washington section. myloc.me

ballinisahabit: 6:02 PM Wow, Pondexter has three fouls, two offensive

DanWetzel: 6:03 PM Why I love WVU. Mountaineer fan just showed up wearing shorts and a racoon cap. It’s 39 degrees and raining outside.

TheBigLead: 6:03 PM RT @tyduffy: World Cup 2010: Is Maradona Insane? Nike’s New Fairy Purple Shoes bit.ly

goodmanonfox: 6:03 PM This is one ugly offensive game; Washington fortunate to be up 3 with Pondexter having 3 fouls. myloc.me

theupsetblog: 6:04 PM RT @DanWetzel: Why I love WVU. Mountaineer fan just showed up wearing shorts and a racoon cap. It’s 39 degrees and raining outside.

TheHoopsReport: 6:05 PM Butler has missed a ton of easy shots – layups and open 3’s. They are totally outplaying Cuse and could easily be up 15-20.

RealJayWilliams: 6:07 PM Bitler reminds me of the “Super Cuts” commercial: Get in, get confident. Confidence is all teams need to win big time ball games.

goodmanonfox: 6:07 PM Greg Paulus sitting next to me and starts slapping the floor during timeouts. myloc.me

SethDavisHoops: 6:07 PM I hope everyone is following @GregAnthony50. We both have our laptops on the desk, tweeting away. He’s running the point, I’m Anderson Hunt.

PeteThamelNYT: 6:07 PM Utah is a fairly conservative state. Locals may not want to be within earshot of Jim Boeheim’s halftime speech. Butler up 35-25 at half.

greggdoyelcbs: 6:08 PM In Mariotti’s defense, (1) he knows I don’t like him and (2) I’m wearing a tight T-shirt. Add it up and (3) he was scared inside

theupsetblog: 6:08 PM RT @PeteThamelNYT: Utah is a fairly conservative state. Locals may not want to be within earshot of Jim Boeheim’s halftime speech. Butle …

RealJayWilliams: 6:09 PM Why would Quincy Pondexter even put the ball on the ground? Just go straight up. Have to understand the situation when you have 2 fls.

ballinisahabit: 6:09 PM RT @goodmanonfox: Greg Paulus sitting next to me and starts slapping the floor during timeouts.

greggdoyelcbs: 6:09 PM Turnovers in first half: Syracuse 12, Butler 2. TWO!

theupsetblog: 6:09 PM so they expand Carrier Dome from b-ball size to football size for the regional…and all the seats are empty. hopefully Cornell fills it up.

PeteThamelNYT: 6:09 PM Hard to say. Lot won’t come till 930ish. RT @KyleRowland: @PeteThamelNYT Estimate on the number of Cornell fans in the Carrier Dome?

theupsetblog: 6:10 PM Weve been tuning out J.Sloan 4 20yrs Lol RT @PeteThamelNYT: Utah…Locals may not want to be within earshot of Jim Boeheim’s halftime speech

SethDavisHoops: 6:10 PM Quincy Pondexter with three fouls. Major problem.

greggdoyelcbs: 6:11 PM Onuaku coaching up Jackson before 2nd 1/2. I think he’s saying: Rick — stop missing bunnies.

ballinisahabit: 6:12 PM Impressive play for Holiday. Making up for Pondexter being out.

theupsetblog: 6:12 PM RT @sportsguy33: I’m about to blow your mind. Ready? Greg Gumbel is 63 years old.

ballinisahabit: 6:13 PM Dear WVU: You can’t make an entry pass from the top of the key. They teach you that in middle school. Throw it to the wing! Get an angle!

greggdoyelcbs: 6:13 PM Mariotti’s out here for second half. Way to go, Jay. That team in orange? It’s Syracuse.

PeteThamelNYT: 6:14 PM Things I never thought I’d type. Washington has no answer for Deniz Kilicli. The Big Turk has 6, nearly double his average. UW 29-27.

JohnGasaway: 6:14 PM When I woke up this morning I did not think I would be seriously considering talking about Deniz Kilicli.

greggdoyelcbs: 6:14 PM Syracuse’s DaShonte Riley: Worst freshman 7-footer since Shagari Alleyne?

greggdoyelcbs: 6:15 PM Even if I tried to forget, he’d do something to remind me

Mark_Schlabach: 6:15 PM Only the fourth time all season Cuse has trailed at half and it’s the Orange’s biggest halftime deficit

ballinisahabit: 6:16 PM HAHAHA RT @BeyndArcMMiller: Nice to see Huggins get Deniz Kilicli off the sideline and into the game ow.ly

goodmanonfox: 6:16 PM Source told FOXSports.com that Gonzaga assistant Leon Rice just accepted Boise State job. Further proof Mark Few isn’t going anywhere.

rushthecourt: 6:17 PM Love it. RT @OntheDLpodcast: Am I the only one who loves the fact that Gus Johnson’s glasses are at least three sizes too big for him?

greggdoyelcbs: 6:17 PM Two possessions, two TO’s. Syracuse really tightened up its game at halftime

Mark_Schlabach: 6:18 PM Might be big play by Rautins there. Beat 2 Dogs for long RB and nailed 3

greggdoyelcbs: 6:19 PM Does Gordon Hayward not realize he’s a great player? DO something, brother

Mark_Schlabach: 6:19 PM Much quicker pace to start 2nd half, which favors Cuse obviously

theupsetblog: 6:19 PM Butler is being stupid now. They have taken 4 threes in a row. Being patient and making good passes, but only for the most open 3-pt shooter

greggdoyelcbs: 6:21 PM If Boeheim doesn’t tell his players to pull their heads out their a$$, he’s not a HOFer

Mark_Schlabach: 6:21 PM Cuse has not only turned it over a bunch, but many of them have been ugly, too

theupsetblog: 6:22 PM looking back, even if Cuse wins, can’t believe people really had UTEP beating Baylor in the first round. #alittletooexcitedforupsets

greggdoyelcbs: 6:23 PM I swear, Bill Self is coaching Syracuse tonight.

greggdoyelcbs: 6:24 PM Mariotti gone again. Idiot.

BracketDobber: 6:24 PM UNLEASH THE WES AND ANDY!

theupsetblog: 6:25 PM RT @benbags: Some K-State fan just sat down next to Pat Riley & she hasn’t stopped talking to him. He looks slightly annoyed.

greggdoyelcbs: 6:25 PM Rautins only Cuse player worth a damn tonight

SethDavisHoops: 6:25 PM Can anyone explain to me why Wesley Johnson is setting up on the block and not moving on offense?

Mark_Schlabach: 6:25 PM Rautins bringing Cuse back, down 39-35

ballinisahabit: 6:26 PM Am I the only one that thinks Butler looks a little rattled right now?

theupsetblog: 6:27 PM Rautins shows off his NBA range, he could play in the NBA like …. HIS DAD LEO. you totally didn’t know that or see that coming.

greggdoyelcbs: 6:27 PM Wes Johnson decided to show up. Welcome to the game, Wes. Damn he’s good.

Mark_Schlabach: 6:27 PM Cuse takes a 40-39 lead with 8 straight points. Two big 3s by Rautins and Wes Johnson. Butler timeout

rushthecourt: 6:27 PM Wanna know which school has most fans represented at ES arena tonight? Utah. By far.

rushthecourt: 6:27 PM Code about to be called on Butler. Syracuse has arrived.

midmajority: 6:28 PM 39-37 at 14m 2H. Holding on. Remember, 5-seeds have to work 5 times harder.

BracketDobber: 6:28 PM Holy moly where did this come from? I know…they’ve woken up! (for now)

midmajority: 9:03 PM The officiating in the Xavier-K-State game is getting surreal. 1H: calling nothing; 2H: calling dirty looks

brendanloy: 9:03 PM 1.35 vs. Temple, 1.45 vs. Wisconsin, and now… RT @JohnGasaway Unofficially, in the first half Cornell scored 0.52 points per possession.

    greggdoyelcbs: 9:07 PM Lord-a-mercy, here’s my Syracuse-Butler story. Don’t let Cuse fans see it … bit.ly

aglock: 9:07 PM Let me rephrase that: I don’t wear long pants when playing goalkeeper for our O-30 team.

GaryParrishCBS: 9:08 PM UK-Cornell got all the hype, but KSU and Xavier are the ones providing a great game. Wildcats up 44-43 with 13:34 left.

ESPNAndyKatz: 9:09 PM In an tournament full of upsets we might actually get a chalk Elite Eight in Syracuse with Kentucky vs. West Virginia in a 1 vs. 2 matchup.

MattZemek_CFN: 9:09 PM @brendanloy: Butler’s a great story, no doubt, but I’m worried that KY or Duke will now have an advantage in the title game. #thinkingahead

brendanloy: 9:10 PM @ESPNAndyKatz And the winner may become the national title favorite.

midmajority: 9:10 PM RT @JohnGasaway Unofficially, in the first half Cornell scored 0.52 points per possession.

brendanloy: 9:11 PM @MattZemek_CFN Xavier winning won’t fix that, though.

tsnmike: 9:12 PM What we learned from West Virginia’s win over Washington. (Huggs gets to stick around for the weekend): bit.ly

brendanloy: 9:12 PM @MattZemek_CFN I’d love to see Butler-UNI in one semifinal and Duke-UK in the other. Would guarantee a David vs. Goliath final.

SethDavisHoops: 9:12 PM Kentucky went on a 6-0 run during halftime.

brendanloy: 9:13 PM Earlier, Loyette pointed to a picture of a sea lion and a monkey and asked, “What’s that?” Then she pointed to Bob Huggins on TV and said, “What’s that?” True story.

ballinisahabit: 9:15 PM Wow taking a charge against Cousins takes some stones

GaryParrishCBS: 9:15 PM Yes. That’s why I picked UK to win the title. Because I hate UK. Hate. Hate. Hate. RT @brandoburn: @garyparrishcbs u really hate UK don’t u

tsnmike: 9:15 PM Eric Blesoe just pulled himself out of the game, holding his side.

TheBigLead: 9:21 PM In the East? Sure. LeBron + Cornell could win 15-20. RT @TupeloSports This Kentucky team + Lebron could make NBA playoffs?

brendanloy: 9:22 PM Well, at least Gus Johnson got both of tonight’s good games.

CBSSportsGang: 9:25 PM 84 percent of the country on Gus Johnson!

aglock: 9:32 PM I can’t believe the selection committee set up a possible regular-season rematch in the West Elite EIght. Amateurs.

GaryParrishCBS: 9:32 PM Better turn it on KSU-Xavier. Gus Johnson is turning into Gus Johnson.

rushthecourt: 9:33 PM We got a “Ha-HAAAAAA!!” from Gus. The world makes sense again.

aglock: 9:43 PM Think Cornell would have signed for UK shooting 44%, 2-15 from 3 and only +3 on the glass? Yeah, me too. Big Red need a couple of Js

brendanloy: 9:45 PM 32 1/2 minutes into the game, Cornell has only scored 30 points. Kentucky has only scored 40. Crazy.

TheHoopsReport: 9:45 PM Terrell Holloway should have been T-ed up for that. You can’t do that. He grabbed Curtis Kelly for a good 5 sec at the FT line.

brendanloy: 9:56 PM Hit the third! Tie game! K-State ball

    brendanloy: 9:56 PM OVERTIME!!!

DanWetzel: 9:56 PM Even as UK-Cornell got close (6), it never felt Cornell could win. They have just 34 points. Had they shut out UK in 2nd, still be down 4

goodmanonfox: 9:56 PM Xavier with an assistant from K-State’s Chris Merriweather to go to OT.

brendanloy: 9:56 PM In a weird turn of events, K-State coach is upset because of a crucial FAILURE by the official to call a foul against his team.

greggdoyelcbs: 9:57 PM Onions by Holloway. Three FT with 5 seconds left? Darius Washington has no idea what that’s like

tsnmike: 9:57 PM So now we have Jeff Foote playing the role of Chas McFarland. How is that not intentional?

GaryParrishCBS: 9:57 PM Darius Washington can’t believe he just made those free throws.

theupsetblog: 9:57 PM Len Elmore is Grade A D to the Bag RT @albolte: I’m not sure it’s possible for the CBS color man to be any more in the bag for K-State. Ugh.

brendanloy: 9:57 PM (K-State actually fouled X before the shot, it wasn’t called, then they fouled again on the 3-point shot, which was called.)

rushthecourt: 9:57 PM If Cousins would have done what Foote just did, he would have been kicked out of the game.

TheBigLead: 9:58 PM refs missing calls everywhere – end of KSU game … Foote just tackled Cousins (takedown) and no intentional foul called. Bilas angry

TheBigLead: 9:58 PM “that’s a horrible call. that’s impossible to miss.” – Jay Bilas on Foote tackle of Cousins. Nice of DeMarcus not to flip out

jppalm: 9:59 PM We’re getting KSU-X at my place. How much time left in the first half for UK-Cornell?

brendanloy: 9:59 PM Meanwhile, in the Cornell game, a Big Red player tackled UK’s Cousins and somehow wasn’t called for an intentional foul. Jay Bilas pissed.

rushthecourt: 9:59 PM Not saying that, but come on. RT @blackburnreview: @rushthecourt Yup, its a conspiracy

brendanloy: 9:59 PM Kentucky by 10 with 2:47 left. Does Cornell have one final run in ’em?

midmajority: 10:00 PM I don’t know which is more shocking: K-State’s stupidity on that critical play or the mid-happy officiating. OT in Utah. Down is up.

SethDavisHoops: 10:00 PM Mystified how that foul on Cousins wasn’t intentional. Wasn’t even close.

greggdoyelcbs: 10:00 PM Curtis Kelly to the line is X’s best defense

    brendanloy: 10:00 PM 49-37 UK, 2:37 left. #gameover #reversejinx #noreallyitsprobablyover

greggdoyelcbs: 10:00 PM Well, it was …

SethDavisHoops: 10:01 PM Kentucky re-asserted control by abandoning the jump shots and punching it inside. Should never have gone away from that.

aglock: 10:01 PM Now maybe it’s hack-a-cousins time. cornell needs as many poss as possible now.

JohnGasaway: 10:01 PM Kansas State’s defense at the rim in this game has been phenomenal.

theupsetblog: 10:02 PM Can I mute Len Elmore? Gus is all I want to hear right now.

midmajority: 10:04 PM The visual symbol for Xavier’s play in this game is a 20-lb. pair of blue and silver TruckNutz.

DanWetzel: 10:04 PM 1:56 left some Cornell fans leaving. Yes, victory is unlikely. But when is the next time you even have a chance in the S16?

brendanloy: 10:04 PM Cornell within 10, needs some turnovers. Xavier within 1.

TheBigLead: 10:04 PM Xavier, i swear, seems to make every necessary three. a cover here is going to be impossible. Pullen been a matador since his 3rd foul

brendanloy: 10:05 PM For a second, I was really excited that some key Kentucky player had fouled out. Then I remembered the K-State game is the one on my TV.

brendanloy: 10:06 PM Cornell has the possession arrow. Okay, steal, hit a 3, jump ball, hit a 3, and it’s a 4-point game. #believe

brendanloy: 10:06 PM (To be clear, those things haven’t happened, I’m just saying it would be awesome if they did.)

TheBigLead: 10:06 PM you know what’s shocking? Cornell could STILL cover 8.5 despite that disaster of a 1st half. KState? No shot. none. X shoots FTs too well

JohnGasaway: 10:06 PM Xavier hasn’t had a stop yet in OT.

greggdoyelcbs: 10:07 PM Hey, it was a foul. Dude from Xavier breathed on the KSU center. Legit call

DanWetzel: 10:07 PM In December, Cousins would’ve slugged someone by now. He’s getting hacked. This qualifies as progress

brendanloy: 10:07 PM Why did the one Cornell player pass up that 3? #notfarokhmanesh

brendanloy: 10:08 PM XAVIER WITH ANOTHER CLUTCH 3!! Tied!! 43 second left!!!

greggdoyelcbs: 10:11 PM Xavier is Franciscan monkspeak for gonads

brendanloy: 10:11 PM To review, Xavier hit a 8,000-foot 3 to tie it, then K-State missed a makeable buzzer shot, and we’re going to double overtime

GaryParrishCBS: 10:12 PM How’s the spelling bee going, by the way?

brendanloy: 10:12 PM Admittedly, this is probably not what they had in mind. Anyway it’s 56-45 UK with 59.9 seconds left.

brendanloy: 10:33 PM It’s over. 101-96, final. K-State vs. Butler for a trip to Indianapolis. Xavier falls one clutch shot short. What a game.

RealJayWilliams: 10:41 PM Great effort on behalf of both teams. #Xavier should keep their heads up high as they played their hearts out.

TheBigLead: 10:41 PM final tweet of the night: Gus Johnson, screaming in overtime: is.gd thank you Kansas State!

brando_minich: 10:42 PM @brendanloy There must be some mistake. My odds of winning the pool have increased somehow. This just can’t be true. 😉

brendanloy: 10:43 PM On the bright side, the Butler vs. Goliath storyline stays alive. Butler-Xavier would have been a little anticlimactic, with a guaranteed mid-major Final Four entrant, sort of like if neither Aaron Boone nor Scott Bartman had ever happened, and the Red Sox had played the Cubs in the ’04 World Series, with SOMEONE guaranteed to break their curse.

brando_minich: 10:46 PM @brendanloy I mean, how can I still be alive when we are halfway to the Elite Eight?!?

brendanloy: 10:47 PM All right, I’m signing off for now. Will resume live-tweeting when tomorrow’s games roll around. I’ll leave you with this…

Adding this to the comments since its getting lost in the tweets:

Basketball’s foul rules really turn me off to the sport. Oh look, you jumped in front of me, that means I get a foul! Oh look, you knocked me over, what? No foul?!?

  2. AMLTrojan

Dude, F*CK CBS! Really, the last 12 seconds of Butler-Syracuse is all you want to show us?!?!?!? Not like, say, the last 3 minutes, when it truly was a tight game? Jeez, what crap!

  3. AMLTrojan

2009-2010 Big East basketball regular season = 2009 Pac-10 football regular season; Big East performance in the NCAA tournament = Pac-10 performance in the bowl season. Discuss.

While most will be focused (rightly) on the Cornell/Kentucky game, there’s something interesting possibly about to happen in the West, well, interesting for those who subscribe to the “little guys making good” meme:

In the four years since George Mason became the ultimate pretender mid-major to reach the Final Four (pretender in the sense that their basketball program really isn’t worth a damn), here are the seeds of Butler (2007/2008/2009/2010):

    5/7/9/5

    and here’s Xavier:

    9/3/4/6

If these two match up for the Final Four, and the game is reasonably entertaining, you could at least make the argument that would represent something of a beachhead for mid-majors joining the elite NCAA D1 party.
