LRT Men’s Pool down to a Final 3: Sharon Greggs, Matt Wiser, Casey Zak

With upsets decimating countless brackets and making it impossible for many contestants to gain additional points, the 15th annual Living Room Times men’s NCAA pool has just three contestants still mathematically alive to win: Sharon Greggs, Matt Wiser and Casey Zak. And in Casey’s case, the best he can do is tie Greggs, becoming co-champions of the pool.

Here is how the scenarios break down:

• Matt Wiser wins the pool if Duke reaches the title game, or if Michigan State beats Tennessee tomorrow and either Baylor reaches the title game or Michigan State beats West Virginia in the title game.

• Sharon Greggs ties Casey Zak for the pool championship if Tennessee beats Michigan State tomorrow and Baylor reaches the title game.

• Sharon Greggs wins outright in all other scenarios.

Here are the current standings. After Casey took sole possession of the lead when his Butler-to-the-Final-Four pick came true, Sharon tied him when West Virginia (whom she picked) beat Kentucky (whom Casey picked). Casey cannot get any additional points, as all of his remaining predicted winners are eliminated. Sharon, on the other hand, has Duke beating Baylor tomorrow and West Virginia winning the championship.

Matt Wiser, meanwhile, is in fifth place, but has the opportunity to rise in the standings because of his predicted title game of Duke vs. Michigan State, with the Spartans winning. He will be eliminated tomorrow, and Sharon will clinch at least a share of the pool championship, if both the Blue Devils and Spartans lose. That is also the only scenario in which Casey can stay alive.

While I am disappointed to have fallen out of contention so quickly and decisively this year, I am happy to see that I stand a very good chance of still beating you — even though our brackets are remarkably similar in many respects, and we differed primarily in that I made more risky picks than you did. ;-P
