The Living Room Times Podcast, Episode 1

6 Comments on The Living Room Times Podcast, Episode 1

Becky and I recorded our inaugural Living Room Times Podcast episode this evening. At 51 minutes and 38 seconds, it’s roughly double the length we’d aimed for, but oh well. Perhaps we’ll get better at brevity as we learn the medium. Anyway, without further ado:

The topics discussed include our neurotic foster dog, Becky’s delicious homegrown tomatillos, my new Mac Mini, the Tyler Clemente tragedy, the joys and pitfalls of parenthood, Richard Blumenthal, the Liberty Tree, the potential cosmic significance of our daughter’s bedtime musical choices to USC’s football fortunes … and much more!

We’re not on iTunes yet (though I hope to get us up there soon)… [UPDATE/CORRECTION: Although we’re not yet searchable in the iTunes Music Store, you can already subscribe with iTunes, thanks to Pod-O-Matic.]

Meanwhile, you can view the official episode page and the official podcast page on Pod-O-Matic, which gives you a range of subscription options. You can also download this episode as an MP3 file here. And you can subscribe to this blog’s LRT Podcast category as an RSS feed, or subscribe to the official RSS feed of the podcast, again from Pod-O-Matic.

If you have any comments, thoughts, suggestions, etc., either leave them in comments here, or tweet them at @brendanloy and/or @MileHighBecky, or e-mail me: irishtrojan [at] gmail.com.

After the jump, some links to things discussed or referenced in the podcast:

Our first dance at our wedding, to “In Spite of Ourselves” by John Prine & Iris Dement, which we used as our opening song for the podcast.

Dora the Explorer Wikiquote:

Dora: What was your favorite part of the trip?
SILENCE WHILE DORA WAITS FOR VIEWERS TO ANSWER HER QUESTION
Dora: I liked that too.

This happens at the end of every “Dora” episode, and Loyette is obsessed with it. She constantly asks us what our “favorite part” was — of an outing, of an afternoon, of a conversation, of anything. So that was the inspiration for naming a podcast segment after it.

My Mac Mini setup. Incidentally, I neglected to say this in the podcast, but I didn’t buy it new or anything. Got it off Craigslist for a steal.

• Our neurotic foster greyhound, Elsa.

• The origins of our daughters’ Internet nicknames, “Loyette” and “Loyacita.”

• The Tyler Clementi tragedy.

• The 2006 Cal-USC Gabe Pruitt incident.

• “All Joy and No Fun: Why parents hate parenting” by Jennifer Senior, New York Magazine

• “Yes, Kids Make Us Happier: A response to New York Magazine” by Rufus Griscom, Babble.com

Richard Blumenthal, elected attorney general of Connecticut eight days after my 9th birthday (so, by the time his term expires, he will have been in office for 20 years). Also, the latest polling/projection in his Senate race with Linda McMahon.

• Definition of the word “shmoopy,” which I picked up from our friend V, and have rarely used before, but inexplicably used twice in the podcast.

• “Sons of Liberty,” a.k.a. the “Liberty Tree” song (or simply, in Loyette’s parlance, the “Tree Song”), from the 1957 Disney movie Johnny Tremain and the Sons of Liberty.

I loved, Loved, LOVED your Podcast and listened to the WHOLE thing!!
It felt like the two of you were sitting @ my kitchen table. I even found myself responding to some of your comments. LOL!
You’ve come a long way from being Volt Boy on Compuserve.
    Keep it up!

Volt Boy? Is this some kind of superhero alter ego we should/shouldn’t know about? And will that be the pseudonym of your third child should they be a “he”? (And, obviously, you have a third child!)

The Brendan Geeking Out over Mac minis was fun. And yes, I think Intel crammed the words “dual”, “duo”, and “two” into the product name of their dual core CPUs. Which I’ve always had an internal gripe about.

And having a family in our church with grayhounds, the picture of having to carry one across a floor is quite comical.

Also I still think you should have gone with Beauty and the Geek, especially in light of the aforementioned Mac mini segment 🙂

This was great. Very fun to hear from Becky, too. You two must have some very entertaining discussions in your normal non-internet lives. I think the length is about right if you’re going to do this on a weekly basis.
