But, but, Glenn Beck told me that Obama was going to pass Socialism in the lame duck session! He said we’d all be commie-Nazis by new year!

Yeah, we should all be really worried that one Senator says something might be brought up in the lame duck session, thats a real threat the the Democrats are going to ram through all sorts of legislation just like the right assured us would be true. It was a bullshit reason to spread fear then, and its a bullshit reason to try and spread fear now.

Statements by senior Democrats were, I have to admit, a legitimate reason for the GOP to discuss this as a possibility. However, to anyone with a modicum of political sense, not to mention a basic understanding of, if you will, The Democratic Mind (which becomes paralyzed with FEAR and #PANIC at the merest hint of adversity, never mind a 60-seat electoral shellacking), it was patently obvious that the feared Rahm-it-down-their-throats activist lame-duck session was NEVER. GOING. TO. HAPPEN.

I don’t know that it was just one Senator (that was just one link I found after 30 seconds of searching) and I doubt you do either, but that’s totally beside the point. Even if it’s just one Senator who says he’ll bring up controversial legislation in a lame duck session, how exactly is it “bullshit” fear-mongering to take a Senator at his word?

I think David’s point is that certain folks on the Right took a handful of aspirational statements by liberal senators & representatives about what they felt the Dems should do — none of them commitments by leadership to definitely do this or that — and used them as evidence that the Dems were definitely going to do the absolute worst-case scenario imaginable, passing every piece of bogeyman liberal legislation the Right could dream up.

As I said, I have to reluctantly admit that this is pretty much fair game politically; the Dems asked for it, by virtue of certain lawmakers going on record with dumb statements. But that doesn’t mean the folks on the Right pushing this issue weren’t blatantly manipulating it for partisan fear-mongering purposes. Unless they’re idiots, they know the difference, in terms of the likelihood of something actually happening, between Tom Harkin or Raul Grijalva saying that the Dems SHOULD do that thing, and Nancy Pelosi or Harry Reid saying they WILL do it.

Regardless of what Harkin or Grijalva or other liberals might have said, there was just never any realistic prospect of a runaway lame-duck session happening — absolutely zero chance, zip, zilch, nada — and I said that in advance, and I was right, and I’m going to crow about it now, because anyone who disagreed with me on the likelihood of this happening was not just wrong, but obviously wrong, as I said all along.

Oh, well, then just to be clear, you can aim your crow elsewhere because, as I said at the time:

I agree that, this Congress’ record notwithstanding, controversial legislation isn’t likely to pass in a lame-duck session
