Joe Scott: the WAC will survive

Moments ago, DU basketball coach Joe Scott, speaking at the school’s weekly press conference, answered a question that I submitted through the Internet about the WAC situation. This was my question:

With Hawaii apparently leaving the WAC, and North Texas and several other teams declining invitations to join, the conference looks increasingly unstable on the football side, which could ultimately jeopardize its stability in all sports. Are you concerned about whether there will be a WAC for Denver to join in 2012-13? What is the backup plan if the WAC falls apart?

Scott’s initial answer was, “I got a lot of other concerns, man. I’m not concerned at all. I’m concerned about Alcorn State and I’m concerned about this team getting better.” But he then did briefly address the WAC situation. His answer, as best as I could transcribe it live (I’ll correct as needed once the archived press conference video is available online), was:

“No matter what happens to the WAC, the WAC’s gonna survive. And the WAC is called the Western Athletic Conference, and the Western Athletic Conference is where Denver is, and the Western Athletic Conference is a good home for Denver. Again, it’s no knock on the Sun Belt, but Denver isn’t in the Sun Belt region. … The WAC will be a good home for us no matter who’s in the WAC, and I trust Karl [Benson] — he’s been doing this for a long time, he knows what he’s doing, and the WAC will still be there.”
