IMG_7550.JPGLisa Velte, a.k.a. “The Major’s Girl,” won the second annual Living Room Times College Football Pick ’em Contest, besting Brad Warbiany (a.k.a. “Old Gold & Black”) on a tiebreaker.

Velte, whose identity as “The Major’s Girl” had remained a mystery until this afternoon, and Warbiany both finished with 252 points out of a maximum possible 340. The tie was broken by who did better in predicting the final weekend of games: Velte, who was 12-for-12 on Saturday to Warbiany’s 10-for-12. (Both were 0-for-2 on Friday.)

Velte, seen at right wearing a “FUSC” cheerleader/Song Girl outfit prior to the 2006 USC-ND game, is, of course, my friend and classmate from Notre Dame Law School. She previously won my 2008 Oscar pool. In an odd twist, we actually saw each other yesterday — Loyette and I met up with her during an airport layover — but I had no idea that I was staring at the mysterious “Major’s Girl” until she e-mailed me just now. Nor did she have any idea that she had won my contest, having not followed it closely online. Heh.

[Incidentally… stay tuned for my 6th annual Bowl Pick ’em Contest, coming soon!]

Anyway, the Top 9 in the final standings are as follows:

1. The Major’s Girl (Lisa Velte) 252
2. Old Gold & Black (Brad Warbiany) 252
3. Seawolves 247
4. Jeff F. (Jeff Freeze) 239
5. ADRIAN CLAYBORN WILL EAT YOU (Marty West; last year’s winner) 238
6. Charles Fenwick 235
7. AMLTrojan 222*
8. Brendan Loy 217
9. David K. 214

*scored one “zero” for failing to submit his picks; would likely have finished in #4 to #6 range otherwise

Everyone ranked below ninth forgot at least twice to submit their picks, or in some cases simply stopped competing altogether after a few weeks. Everyone’s lowest score was dropped, so forgetting once to submit picks was not fatal. (Even forgetting twice, and thus getting 0 points one week, wasn’t enough to stop AMLTrojan from finishing ahead of David and me. Heh.)

For the record, the scores of the various forgetters/non-finishers were:

10. Benjamin Sloniker 191 (two “zeroes”)
11. B. Minich 161 (four “zeroes”)
12. AwesomeSauce 134 (six “zeroes”)
13. IrishDC 104 (seven “zeroes”)
14. Ken Stern 104 (seven “zeroes”)
15. USCarlos 90 (eight “zeroes”)
16. Alison Flipse Vargas 85 (eight “zeroes”)
17. The Vacated Heisman 68 (nine “zeroes”)
18. amyjoy 61 (eight “zeroes”)
19. Becky Loy 19 (eleven “zeroes”)

Hey where’s my asterisk, I forogot to submit picks one week, AND i submitted picks another week part way through the day and missed out on about 8 or so games.

In fact, wasn’t it my beratting you for not having the contest prominently featured on the blog and thus me not remembering what led you to do the drop lowest score option??

Forgetting to submit picks one week doesn’t get you an asterisk, because the lowest score is dropped. Andrew got an asterisk because he forgot twice (and thus got one “zero”).

I forgot about your half-missed week, though. You probably would have beaten me if not for that, causing me to finish dead last among contestants who didn’t drop 3+ weeks. So, thanks! 🙂

As for Becky, she never bothered to submit picks again after Week 1 (or rather Week 2, when the contest started).

Yeah, I totally missed all the times he apparently posted asking for me to reveal my secret identity. I thought Yahoo would tell him who I was, since he’s the contest administrator. I’ll admit, I don’t follow Brendan’s (or anyone’s) Twitter very much, and I must have missed the blog posts about it.

She apparently never saw the Twitter or blog pleas asking her to identify herself. Didn’t happen to be reading the blog at the right times, I guess, and I don’t think she’s on Twitter. Says she never even knew she was winning the contest until seeing this post today. 🙂

    jinx 🙂

The blog posts were actually just tweets and FriendFeed posts, promoted to the homepage, so your eyes might have glossed right over them.

  7. David K.

Wait, wait wait, no Twitter AND not obsessively reading the blog? What? You want us to believe you actually have a LIFE of some sort?!? 😉

  8. Lisa

I actually have a Twitter account, but I never use it. I think I’ve tweeted about 3 times ever in my life. And Brendan is right, I tend to gloss over the tweets and FriendFeed posts on the blog.

I knew I had a chance of winning the contest, but since I was busy with a wedding this weekend I didn’t get around to checking to see if I’d won until today.

  9. B. Minich

I think I told you at the beginning of the year that I would forget this dumb contest at some point. 😉

Congrats Lisa! And even more congrats on the dramatic reveal!
