Congratulations, Auburn

I may have been rooting for Oregon, and I may mock the SEC and its insufferable fans mercilessly, and I may have been hoping for justice vis a vis Cam Newton, and I may have been slightly less than gracious in some of my tweets when it didn’t happen… but, in spite of all that, I’m genuinely happy for Auburn’s fans, whose Tigers — and I say this as a USC fan — were royally screwed in 2004, worse than the Trojans have ever been screwed by the BCS. For them, this is a moment long delayed, and they deserve to enjoy it. All the more so because they didn’t chant “S-E-C! S-E-C!” when it was all over.

Anyway, highlights:

War Eagle, and such.

P.S. Musberger’s “This is for all the Tostitos” line spurred an explosion of hilarious mockery on Twitter. A sampling:

“There’s a long drive… it’s gonna be, I believe… THE GIANTS WIN #ALLTHETOSTITOS! THE GIANTS WIN #ALLTHETOSTITOS!”

“Let’s win this game for #allthetostitos that never had a chance to get here.”

“Give me liberty, or give me #allthetostitos.”

“My name is Inigo Montoya. You ate all the Tostitos. Prepare to die.” #allthetostitos

“You’re either with us, or you’re with #allthetostitos.”

“You cannot stop #allthetostitos, you can only hope to contain them.”

“Understand, Frodo, I would take #allthetostitos out of a desire to do good. But through me, they would wield a power too great and terrible to imagine.”

(Yeah, that last one — actually the last three — were mine. The funnier ones above weren’t mine, natch.)

Umm, no, the Tigers weren’t screwed worse than the Trojan’s by the BCS, the Trojans were left out of the National Championship game despite being #1 in BOTH polls, that is a worse screwing by the BCS. You can argue that the Tigers were screwed more overall because they didn’t even have a shot at the AP title in 2004 but thats a different type of screwage.

I explained my position on this in the linked 2004 post:

[T]he players did every single thing that was asked of them. How can you deny a Division I-A team that hasn’t lost a single game the chance to play for the biggest prize in the sport?

I realize that some will disagree with regard to Utah and [Boise State]. But at the very least, it is indisputable that the top three — the Trojans, Sooners and Tigers, major-conference teams from the Pac-10, Big 12 and SEC, respectively — all deserve an opportunity to play for the title. Any system that doesn’t give them such a chance is monumentally unjust.

I’m a loyal USC fan, and this year, my Trojans are safely in the championship game while somebody else gets screwed. Last year, it was the other way around, but I won’t hesitate to say that this year’s fiasco is far worse than what happened last year. Last year, each of the Top 3 teams had one loss, which means the team that got “left out” had far less reason to complain; the Trojans could have reached the title game if only they had won all of their games (i.e., if they had beaten Cal). This year, by contrast, there is no such consolation for the team that gets “left out.” Auburn has simply been f***ed. There is no other accurate way to describe it.

Don’t get me wrong, USC was screwed, too. But Auburn was definitely screwed worse, because they were undefeated yet excluded. Also, as you note, they didn’t get to sniff a national title, whereas USC got the AP title. So that’s an additional reason why the situation for Auburn (and Auburn fans) was far worse.

I agree they were screwed worse overall, but I still think the BCS screwed USC more. Of course that doesn’t hold a candle to how badly the NCAA screwed USC, especially in light of how they didn’t even touch Cam the Scam Newton.

I’m with David on this. The system sucks, but Auburn was not “screwed”. They played what was considered to be a weaker schedule, they were ranked #3, and prior to the game, more people questioned USC’s bona fides heading into that game than they did Oklahoma’s. USC in 2003, and Oregon in 2001, were screwed worse than Auburn in 2004.

To put it another way, what happened to Auburn in 2004 was a tragedy, not a travesty. There was no miscarriage of justice; the system worked the way it was supposed to. It’s just that the system sucks.

No, USC was screwed worse in 2003 because Oklahoma didn’t even win their own conference and they were selected for the “national championship game” over the Pac-10 champion. Not only that, but Oklahoma was completely dominated and blown out in that Big-12 championship game, and indisputably not even the best team in their own conference.

Auburn got screwed in 2004, but USC beat that Tiger team 23-0 at Auburn the season before, and USC beat the Virginia Tech team Auburn played by 11 earlier in the season, while Auburn squeaked out only a 3 point win in their bowl game vs. that same Tech team. Not to mention that USC beat the Big-12 champ 55-19 in pretty convincing fashion in the championship game. That left No Doubt who the best team of 2003 and 2004 was.

Of course there shoudl be a playoff and the Bowl system completely stinks. This season left No Doubt that the Bowls are really becoming a staple of a by-gone era. When Pitt, Kentucky, Miami (OH), and Middle Tennessee are playing post January Bowl games, it’s time to go playoff.
