Countdown reaches zero

MSNBC talk-show host Keith Olbermann unexpectedly announced the end of his show Countdown today. The eight-year-long show was the highest-rated on MSNBC. Olbermann, who gained fame as a host of Sports Center on ESPN, started the show as a humorous look at the news, but morphed into a vocal liberal critic in the later half of the Bush presidency. (Hat tip: President Bartlett for the title.)

So you weren’t being a good journalist and factually reporting on the number of viewers actually watching Olbermann ?

The eight-year-long show was the highest -ated on MSNBC(sic)

I assume you meant highest rated.

Still…isn’t that a little like being the tallest dwarf?

A long national nightmare indeed. I can’t think of anything more harmful to our democracy, or a greater threat to our liberty, than Olbermann’s sorry excuse for a show. And with Hawaii again failing to produce a birth certificate for Obama, I think it’s clear that the whole Left-wing propaganda apparatchik is slowly imploding on itself.

Wow, a birther! That’s a whole new level of troll! We should put this guy in a room with Sandy, that would be HILARIOUS!

    @gahrie and Alasdair

You know I thought about mentioning in the post that you two would be thrilled by this, but it seemed kinda obvious. Glad to entertain at least.

    David K:

Am I happy to see him gone? You bet. But my distaste for Olbermann goes back much farther than his moonbat days on MSNBC. I have disliked him since he tried to steal Fred Roggin’s act here on local TV in Los Angeles. I almost never watched him on Sportscenter and never watched a single episode of Countdown.

However, not too long ago I was defending Olbermann here on this very site when he was suspended.

I liked him on ESPN but never watched MSNBC myself so I really don’t have much of an opinion one way or the other on him. He’s obviously staunchly liberal so I no doubt agree with him on a number of issues, but he seems to be a hard guy to work with based on the numerous issues he’s run in to with leadership at the various places he’s worked.

I may have agreed with a lot of the political views he expressed in the past few years, but trying to watch his show was like sitting still while getting hit in the forehead by a ball-peen hammer for an hour (maybe 2 hours).

Let me assure you, neither is a pleasant experience.

David #6 – I would have preferred Olbermann to be a journalist with integrity, able to report without intruding his *own* biases … since he was not capable of that, I’ll settle with folk realising how worthless he is and him being off the air – not by being banned by the government, not by being physically chased off the stage, simply by the market choosing to recognise Olbermann’s lack of value …

  10. David K. Post author

I can’t wait to see you denounce Lmbaugh, OReilly and Beck Alasdair, the spew bias, lackingg integrity whatsoever.

  11. Alasdair

David – I’m going to guess that you are exhibiting your traditional customary Graunadian accuracy, both journalistically and linguistically …

If you actually mean Limbaugh, O’Reilly, and Beck – as soon as they claim regularly to be journalists, I’ll start denouncing them … as long as they continue to call themselves entertainers who happen to report, then I do not see things needing to be denounced, any more than Colbert or Stewart need to be denounced …

I realise that this is a difficult and challenging concept for a davidkian, but, dammit, I *know* you can do it, David !

    (innocent grin)

How is Olbermann any different from the three i nmaed Al? Two of them work for a network called Fox NEWS and yet still spout lies on a daily basis.

Also, you better watch your smart ass comments else you might find yourself trolling on another blog before long. Just some friendly advice.

Brendan: I think you need to address this, and perhaps explain it.

    Just to make it clear:

If you want me to leave, all you have to do is ask, and I’ll go…sadder but wiser.

Brandon alerted me that I should poke my head in and pipe up here before all Hell breaks loose. I confess I hadn’t read a single comment on this thread until now, and even now I’ve only skimmed most of them. But anyway, to the issue at hand:

    1) I believe David’s comment was directed at Alasdair, not you, gahrie.

    2) David doesn’t speak for me. I am neither threatening anyone with a ban nor asking anyone to leave.

    3) Again, I confess I haven’t followed this or some other recent political threads too closely, but what I’ve seen in terms of bickering and personal sniping, while unfortunate for and among all concerned, doesn’t rise to the level of being ban-worthy.

    4) In the unlikely event that anyone were ever to be banned again, a la Coach Leahy, it would be for malicious and obviously inappropriate, over-the-top, and most likely off-topic personal attacks, not for the annoying petty sniping that often occurs amidst the rough-and-tumble of political debate. I wish you guys, all of you, you know who you are, would cut it out, stop calling each other names, stop being fucking children, stop with the psuedo-clever nonsense bullshit, and debate the substance of political issues like grownups… and, yes, I wish Alasdair and Sandy Underpants, in particular, would start more frequently saying things that make at least a little bit of goddamn sense… but I’m not going to ban any of you for any of that. The ban-hammer would only come out for misconduct so severe that the appropriateness of a crackdown of some form would, I’d like to think, not really be debatable among fair-mined observers, of whatever political persuasion.

    5) Any hypothetical ban (or request to leave) CERTAINLY wouldn’t be for disagreeing with me politically, so you can cut the “sadder but wiser” crap.

    6) Regardless, again, David doesn’t speak for me, particularly in this regard. There is only one Lord of the Blog… only one who can bend the ban-hammer to his will… and he does not share power. 🙂

By the way, gahrie, particularly on this State of the Union Eve, the correct phrase is “Let me be clear.” 🙂

I didn’t think Brendan would ban him he’s far more tolerant than I would be, FYI, just frustrated with putting up with him and tired from a long day. Sorry for any confusion, particularly to you gahrie for thinking it was aimed at you.
